Nov 24th 2012, 00:55

Regarding Imani Perry's commentary on racial equality ["Step up, Mr. President," Outlook, Nov. 11]:

Piling on Ivy City with woe
Nov 24th 2012, 00:54

Regarding Courtland Milloy's Nov. 14 Metro column, "Throwing Ivy City under the bus":

All too often, marginalized communities are the direct recipients of environmental burdens but receive little benefit from the placement of these harmful facilities. The decision by D.C. Mayor Vincent C. Gray (D) to relocate a bus depot to Ivy City might have been the path of least economic and political resistance, but it failed to consider the social distress that the community faces.

Israel's poor treatment of refugees
Nov 24th 2012, 00:53

Aaron Sagui, spokesman for the Israeli Embassy, calls "untrue" reports that Israel has "refused to distinguish between illegal immigrants and asylum seekers" [letters, Nov. 11]. But research by Human Rights Watch and Israeli rights groups has shown that, on seven occasions since June, Israeli forces summarily rejected scores of people at the new border fence with Egypt, at times using stun grenades and tear gas.

Should a surrender be courteous?
Nov 24th 2012, 00:53

In the old British Empire, manners mattered. I was growing up in England in 1982 when Falkland Islands Gov. Rex Hunt, who died last week ["Inspired Britons with leadership during Falklands invasion," Obituaries, Nov. 13], declined to shake hands with the commander of Argentine forces that had captured the islands.

An unequal battle between Israel, Hamas
Nov 24th 2012, 00:42

Regarding Richard Cohen's Nov. 20 op-ed column, "The callousness of Hamas":

How does this sentence point to anything but media bias: "Israel cares more about sparing innocent lives — including those of Palestinians — than does Hamas"? As I write, the number of killed is now 130 Palestinians to four Israelis. Where is the caring in that? Check and you'll find that the casualties have always been similarly warped.

It's time to rebuild America
Nov 24th 2012, 00:31

Too much post-election analysis has focused on voter demographics and campaign mechanics, leaving Democrats in danger of drawing the wrong lessons from our electoral success.

Demographics alone are not destiny. There is nothing in this year's election returns that guarantees Democrats a permanent majority in the years to come. President Obama and the Democratic Party earned the support of key groups — young people, single women, Latinos, African Americans, auto workers in the Rust Belt and millions of other middle-class Americans — because of our ideas.

Syrian rebels at cross purposes
Nov 24th 2012, 00:30

The Syrian opposition took a big step forward this month by forming a broad political coalition that includes local activists who started the revolution. But the opposition's military command is still a mess, and until it's fixed, jihadist extremists will keep getting more powerful.

Digesting the lessons of Twinkies
Nov 24th 2012, 00:30

"All Gods were immortal."

— Stanislaw Lec

And also brands, the gods of the marketplace. Earthquakes may strike, dynasties may fall and locusts may devour the crops, but Oldsmobile and Pan Am are forever. Never mind.

Syria is central to holding together the Mideast
Nov 24th 2012, 00:27

The civil war in Syria may well be the last act in the story of the disintegration of the Middle East as we know it. The opportunity to hold the region together and to rebuild it on a firmer foundation of tolerance, freedom and, eventually, democratic stability is slipping from our grasp.

Truancy in the District demands more from parents
Nov 24th 2012, 00:26

A death wish is unfolding before our very eyes. A generation of youth in this city is self destructing. These youth, mostly black, are wandering aimlessly toward a cliff's edge.

Headlines tell the story.

U.S., Mexico should build on their economic ties
Nov 24th 2012, 00:25

Both Mexico and the United States held presidential races this year, and the results offer an opportunity to redirect our countries' bilateral relationship. The U.S. election demonstrated the growing demographic bonds that connect our countries' futures. The election in Mexico heralded a new era of change and reform, as much as a new style of governing, based on pragmatism and results.

Why U.S. troops must stay in Afghanistan
Nov 24th 2012, 00:25

Will the United States continue to conduct counterterrorism operations in South Asia? That question is central to any discussion about U.S. troop presence and mission in Afghanistan. The answer can be yes only if we pursue and support the current strategy, retaining roughly 68,000 troops in Afghanistan into 2014 and about half that number thereafter.

Photo of dead baby in Gaza holds part of the 'truth'
Nov 24th 2012, 00:24

A photograph may be worth a thousand words, but even at its most revealing it never tells an entire story. It is the capture of a single moment, a split-second version of the truth. But if it is an effective photograph, it moves the viewer toward a larger truth.

Going beyond 'mainstream schlock'
Nov 24th 2012, 00:13

The Post's reviews of live music — or the absence thereof — in the Style section are troubling. Most of the reviews that get printed are of big-name pop acts, obscure, chalkboard-screeching bands (usually at the 9:30 Club) or classical ensembles.

Separating Alexandria and Fairfax County
Nov 24th 2012, 00:12

A Nov. 15 article on voting challenges in Fairfax County ["In election postmortem, finger-pointing over poll workers," Metro] was accompanied by a photo caption that referred to "a polling site at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria." This reference perpetuates a long-standing practice by The Post of referring to large sections of Fairfax County as "Alexandria."

Noble, but different, professions
Nov 24th 2012, 00:12

In the upbeat Nov. 17 Metro article "Really cool ice in the District," The Post celebrated the District's innovative new Canal Park. However, I was disappointed when it came to the mention of the park's designers.

The facts about higher rates
Nov 24th 2012, 00:12

The art of fact-checking took a beating in columnist Glenn Kess- ler's review ["Would more taxes on the wealthy mean fewer jobs?," Fact Checker, Nov. 18] of our rigorous Ernst & Young study analyzing the long-term economic effects of higher marginal tax rates on jobs and investment.

Editorial Board: War looms once again in Congo
Nov 23rd 2012, 23:43

ONE OF THE globe's worst killing fields is once again aflame. The eastern region of Congo was the epicenter of two wars in the past 15 years that laid waste to an estimated 5 million lives — many lost to hunger and disease that followed in the footsteps of armed conflict.

Editorial Board: Mr. McDonnell's chance for a transportation legacy
Nov 23rd 2012, 23:43

ANEW POLL SHOWS that Virginia Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (R) is one of the most popular governors in the country, with a 2-to-1 approval rating. In Virginia he is seen favorably by men and women; whites and blacks; young and old; Republicans and — well, even a respectable third of Virginia Democrats give him a thumbs up. The survey, by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, suggests that Mr. McDonnell has a reserve of political capital going into his last full year as chief executive.

Editorial Board: Could Mr. Obama have done more to help homeowners?
Nov 23rd 2012, 23:43

AS ANOTHER year draws to a close, the mind turns naturally to might-have-beens. Economists, it seems, are no exception. A number of them, including former advisers to the president, are relitigating the Obama administration's efforts to bail out distressed homeowners, telling The Post's Zachary A. Goldfarb that a more aggressive approach would have pumped more cash into more households faster, thus bolstering consumer spending and overall economic growth. The recession might have ended sooner.

The CIA director's flaws
Nov 23rd 2012, 23:33

Regarding the Nov. 13 editorial "The spymaster's fall":

Gen. David H. Petraeus was never a good choice for CIA director, and now President Obama has a chance to strengthen civilian oversight of the intelligence process. The president's first choice for a national security adviser was a retired Marine general, and the last three intelligence czars have been retired general officers. All of these selections ignored the need for an independent civilian voice to counter the influence and worst-case analysis of military intelligence.

The Petraeus shortcoming was moral
Nov 23rd 2012, 23:33

Regarding Michael Gerson's Nov. 13 op-ed column, "An honorable man's flaw":

Gen. David H. Petraeus did not simply make an error of judgment in engaging in an illicit relationship with Paula Broadwell. Rather, his behavior resulted from a combination of hubris and the lack of commitment to remain faithful to his wife. So I don't see it as what Mr. Gerson refers to as hamartia, the error of an honorable man, resulting in disproportionate misfortune. I see his behavior as a moral failure, "unacceptable, both as a husband and leader of an organization such as ours," as Gen. Petraeus admitted.

No sex? Permission to speak freely, Sir.
Nov 23rd 2012, 23:17

West Pointers are human beings, even those with names such as David Petraeus and Paula Broadwell. I think I have the standing to make this declaration, because I'm a fellow graduate. West Point is long on molding military officers, but a bit short on humanity. Its mission statement stresses the intent to commit every graduate to a career of professional excellence and service, embodying the values of "duty, honor and country." How does West Point do that?

What Bill Clinton can teach Obama about Israelis
Nov 23rd 2012, 22:58

President Obama was right to dispatch Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to the Middle East this past week to help broker a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. But as the president enters his second term, he faces the prospect of bigger challenges in the Middle East, most notably on Iran's nuclear program. To make sure the Israeli government does not act on its own on Iran, Obama needs to gain the trust of the Israeli public.

Our wildlife refuges protect us, too
Nov 23rd 2012, 22:48

The Nov. 19 news article "Wildlife refuges among areas dealt a blow by Sandy" highlighted the high cost of repairing the damage done by Hurricane Sandy. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is struggling to manage its refuges on a limited budget in the face of a serious and long-term threat: climate change.
