Fire displaces Lanham family; firefighter burned Nov 30th 2012, 11:55 A family of three was displaced and a Prince George's County firefighter suffered burns in a house fire Thursday night in Lanham, authorities said. The fire was reported about 9:30 p.m in the 8900 block of Hickory Hill Avenue. Firefighters arrived to find fire on both floors of the two-story house, near the I-295 exit off the Capital Beltway, a statement from the Prince George's County Fire Department said. Read full article >> | Security guard is shot in Laurel-area grocery Nov 30th 2012, 04:33 An armed security guard was shot and wounded Thursday night in a Laurel area grocery store, Prince George's County police said. The shooting occurred just inside the door of the Bottom Dollar Food store in the 12600 block of Laurel-Bowie Road about 7:55 p.m., said Cpl. Larry Johnson, a police spokesman. The guard was taken to a hospital in serious, but believed to not be life-threatening condition, Johnson said. Council member Marion Barry muscled past Chairman Phil Mendelson on Thursday to send a bill that offers new anti-discrimination protections to ex-offenders to the full council for a vote. The Ward 8 council member and former mayor persuaded the Aging and Community Affairs Committee to approve legislation that bars employers from asking about a person's criminal record until after a job offer is made.
