The United Nations General Assembly voted today to upgrade the Palestinian Authority to a "non-member observer state," a symbolic victory in the Palestinian quest for statehood.

The vote was overwhelming, with 138 in favor, nine against, and 41 abstentions. Most of the votes, including the United States' "no," were unsurprising. One important story here is in Europe: The European Union's 27 votes were never going to decide the outcome, but they are an important indicator of potentially changing global diplomacy with regards to Israeli-Palestinian relations.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — A Qatari poet has been sentenced to life imprisonment after a trial that rights groups say highlights the broadening crackdown on dissent across the Gulf.

Mohammed ibn al-Dheeb al-Ajami, who has been detained in solitary confinement since his detention in November 2011, was sentenced by the trial court after being charged with insulting the emir and trying to overthrow the government.

Syria's apparent shutdown of all Internet services has now been confirmed by a second Web-monitoring service, Akamai. The company released this chart of Web traffic in and out of Syria, reporting that the country is "effectively off the Internet." Akamai says the traffic is at zero, a remarkable indication of how swiftly and completely Syria seems to have taken its offline. Removing an entire country from the Internet is no small feat, and has potentially serious implications for Syria's economy, its security and the uprising that began last year.

Web monitor: 100 percent of Syria's Internet just shut down

It appears that the Syrian government may have just taken a drastic measure it has conspicuously avoided over the nearly two years of fighting: cutting itself off from the Internet. Renesys, a Web-monitoring service, reported Thursday morning that sweeping outages in Syria had shut down 92 percent of the country's routed networks. Shortly after, it updated to report that the remaining IP address blocks had gone down, "effectively removing the country from the Internet." The "Syrian Internet Is Off The Air," it announced.
