It's Cyber Monday!

This, I hear, is the day to go online shopping. THE DAY. This is the day when we get together and fix the economy. If we emerge from Cyber Monday with anything but RECORD sales, this is all OUR FAULT! Get on it, America!

Jennifer Rubin: A better way to sell tax reform
Nov 26th 2012, 15:45

The Post reports:

For now, Democrats are seeking $1.6 trillion in new taxes over the next decade collected from about 3 million families at the pinnacle of the income spectrum — those earning more than $250,000 a year. The Democrats want to start by letting the top two tax rates return to 36 percent and 39.6 percent when the Bush tax cuts expire.

Jennifer Rubin: Obama's second-term national security team
Nov 26th 2012, 14:45

For reasons that baffle conservatives (To spite Republicans? To reward a political ally?), the president seems intent on appointing U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice as secretary of state. Quite apart from the Benghazi debacle (which surely would be front and center in her confirmation hearing), her role in talking down more robust action in Syria, her lack of rhetorical control and widespread recognition (even among Democrats in the foreign policy community) that she is no policy heavyweight, her track record on human rights is, well, atrocious. Michael Hirsh explains:

How Obama benefits from a do-nothing Washington
Nov 26th 2012, 14:40

Every lobbyist in Washington knows that whoever can advocate that the government do nothing or defer a matter until later has the advantage. Never underestimate the ability of the government to do nothing.

GOP should resist a 'fiscal cliff' down payment
Nov 26th 2012, 14:22

With the "fiscal cliff" looming and no "grand bargain" in sight, talk in Washington has turned to a "down payment" — a package of spending cuts and revenue increases that would help us avoid the cliff and give leaders more time to strike a long-term deal. House Speaker John Boehner says such a mini-deal would serve as "a down payment on — and a catalyst for — major solutions, enacted in 2013, that begin to solve the problem."

Greg Sargent: The Morning Plum: Republicans whitewash history of filibuster
Nov 26th 2012, 14:06

So it's looking more and more likely that Harry Reid and Democrats will introduce some sort of package of filibuster reforms at the start of the next Congress. Politico reports this morning that Republicans are preparing to go to war against the reforms, and are threatening to grind the Senate to a halt in retaliation:

Jennifer Rubin: What inaugural message should Obama send?
Nov 26th 2012, 13:45

President Obama is said to be considering whether to take corporate money to pay for his inauguration festivities. Some on the left fear that this would lead to undue corporate influence. The Wall Street Journal observed, "Mr. Obama took a variety of steps in his first inauguration to limit the influence of special interests and give the public a window into who paid for the festivities. He released the names of people who bundled contributions and refused to take money from federal registered lobbyists. Craig Holman, a government affairs lobbyist for Public Citizen, said that were Mr. Obama to accept corporate contributions this time, it would 'essentially codify this idea that corporations should be financing politics.' "

Comeuppance for Romney-favoring pundits?
Nov 26th 2012, 13:27

Howard Kurtz of CNN's "Reliable Sources" asks whether there are any consequences for the Michael Barones and the Dick Morrises of the world — folks who used sophisticated-sounding political analysis to completely mis-predict the presidential election in favor of Mitt Romney.

Jennifer Rubin: Morning Bits
Nov 26th 2012, 12:45

The real problem is not in Gaza, but in Tehran. "Israeli intelligence satellites have spied the loading of rockets and other materiel believed to be destined for the Gaza Strip, The Sunday Times reported citing Israeli officials. According to the report, Iran began preparing the weapons shipment around the same time Israel and Hamas negotiated cease-fire understandings late last week."

Mine. Ours.
Nov 26th 2012, 12:15

I've got an idea. Let's build a city, half underground and half under the ocean. Really deep and big. It will be hard to do. Let's dig down to where there's plenty of fossil fuels RIGHT THERE so we can live in harmony with them. We can dig giant rooms that are carved to look like natural rock formations, a drippy Vincent Price theme park. With tunnels out to rooms under the ocean where giant vampire squids try to latch onto our faces with their blood-funnels, but can't because of the really thick glass ceilings.
