Pepco requests $60.8 million rate hike in Md.

Pepco, the regional utility company that has come under fire in recent years for reliability problems, on Friday filed a $60.8 million rate hike request in Maryland that, if approved, would raise the monthly bill of the average residential customer by $7.13, or about 5 percent.

At D.C. school-closure forums, parents urge Henderson to consider alternatives

Hundreds of District parents, teachers and activists showed up at three community meetings this week to challenge and critique Chancellor Kaya Henderson's plan to close 20 under-enrolled schools.

Speaker after speaker argued in favor of keeping the schools open, often saying that shuttering traditional schools shakes parents' confidence and pushes students into fast-growing public charters.

Virginia agencies plan for fiscal cliff

D.C. mayor says city will raise speed limit on two commuter routes

D.C. Mayor Vincent C. Gray announced Friday that he will allow the District Department of Transportation to raise speed limits on two roadways well-known to commuters: Benning Road between Oklahoma and Kenilworth avenues, and D.C. 295.

Locke of Hampton, Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim, outgoing state Democratic Party Chairman Brian Moran, Del. Alfonso Lopez of Arlington, Del. Police investigate homicide in Franconia

Fairfax County police are searching for a suspect after an apparent homicide inside a Franconia town home Friday, a spokesman said.

Police did not immediately release a photo or description of the suspect, but said they do not believe he is armed. They expected to release more information soon.
Officers responded to an emergency call in the 6000 block of Hydrangea Drive around10:20 a.m., said Officer Bud Walker, a Fairfax County police spokesman.
Officers found the body of an adult male inside the home, Walker said.
Police did not immediately release the man's identity or the cause of his death.
Pablo Alvizuri, a neighbor, said three roommates -- all men -- live in the home. He said he had not seen signs of trouble at the house in recent weeks.
A police helicopter buzzed over the scene on Friday afternoon and much of the subdivision was cut off by crime tape.

Police: 1 shot at Morgan State in Baltimore, suspect in custody

BALTIMORE — A suspect is in custody after an apparent shooting on the campus of Morgan State University in Baltimore.

A police spokesman says the shooting happened around 1 p.m. Friday in the 1700 block of East Cold Spring Lane, which runs through the northern part of campus. The spokesman says an adult male was shot, but the person's injuries are not fatal. Police have also recovered a weapon. It was not clear if either person is a student.

Psst: The country's most sought-after whiskey is on its way to Washington again.

Pappy Van Winkle, the ultra-rare, much-in-demand bourbon beloved by both connoisseurs and casual whiskey drinkers, could arrive in Washington "in the next week," said Bill Thomas, the owner of Jack Rose Dining Saloon and Bourbon. He has spoken to sources at the Buffalo Trace Distillery, where Pappy is made under the auspices of the Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery, and the question now is just how much his three bars are going to get.

Alston would face legislative ethics review if she returns to Md. House, speaker says

If Tiffany Alston were reinstated by a court as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, she would still face an uncertain future in the chamber.

House Speaker Michael E. Busch (D-Anne Arundel) said Friday that the return of the former Prince George's County delegate would trigger a review by a legislative ethics committee that could recommend a punishment up to and including expulsion.

Military Bowl, San Jose State reach agreement

San Jose State, fresh off its first 10-win season since 1987, will play a team from the Mid-American Conference in the Military Bowl on Dec. 27 at RFK Stadium, bowl organizers announced Friday.

It will be San Jose State's second trip to the Washington area this season. On Sept. 29, the Spartans defeated Navy, 12-0, in Annapolis. The Spartans' opponent likely will be chosen by the MAC on Saturday after Friday night's conference championship game between No. 18 Kent State and No. 19 Northern Illinois.
