D.C. area forecast: Lingering chill gives way to warmer weekend

The weekend starts December on a warmer note, but with rain chances virtually nil until late Sunday, and the warmth looks to hang around into midweek next week.

Dead, injured dogs found in trash can

A severely injured dog and a dog that had died were found in a trash can in an alley in Southeast Washington, the Washington Human Society said.

The dogs were found Sunday in a can in an alley behind the 3900 block of R Street, humane society officials said.

D.C. sees rise in theft of purses from chairbacks

Thieves have been stepping up efforts to snatch purses and handbags hanging from the backs of chairs in many Washington restaurants and nightclubs, D.C. police said.

In an alert issued Tuesday, police warned that the city's 2nd Police District, which includes the Georgetown area, recently has seen an increase in such crimes.

Special-needs student left aboard city-operated bus

A 4-year-old pupil with special needs was discovered on a city-operated bus in the District on Tuesday afternoon, long after he should have been dropped off at school, officials said.

The boy appeared to be in good health after spending more than six hours on the bus, according to the Office of the State Superintendent of Education, which is responsible for transporting special-needs students in the District.
