Groundbreaking of Vietnam War education center held on the Mall

As the VIPs arrived for Wednesday's ceremonial groundbreaking, Jan C. Scruggs, the man behind the Vietnam War education center, stood on the sidewalk looking for a particular guest.

Retired military officers, members of Congress, Obama administration officials were all due. But when a certain black SUV pulled up, Scruggs pumped his fist.

Groupon jumps on the Wizards bandwagon of woe

Groupon left a little barb against the 0-12 Washington Wizards in its daily deal description Wednesday for a $69 ticket package. Originally, the text compared the team's season to a dam failure.

South River field hockey separates itself from the Anne Arundel pack

For years, Severna Park, South River and Broadneck have battled atop the Anne Arundel field hockey landscape in the area's best public school league.

This season, South River stood alone.

The Seahawks went 6-0 against their biggest rivals, including wins over both in the Maryland 4A East playoffs, and won their first state title since 2005 to secure the No. 1 spot in The Post's final field hockey Top 10.

When the league expanded a couple of years later, it went way west — adding Pittsburgh (and also Villanova). Midge Purce lifts Good Counsel girls' soccer atop final rankings for second straight year

Down his top two kickoff options, Good Counsel Coach Bob Milloy naturally summoned the Olney private school's most decorated soccer player for a tryout in the week leading up to the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference final. When senior Midge Purce showed up to the practice field wearing jeans and boots for that Tuesday practice, the state's winningest football coach sent her out to kick anyway.

Christmas trees are going up and we're wearing parkas, so it's time to sip our first hot cocktails of the season. We'll be highlighting our favorites all week.

901 Restaurant and Bar 's Dean Feddaoui once whipped up drinks behind the bar at Bourbon Steak, and it's easy to tell. For the Oak Barrel Aged Bourbon Cider (pictured above), Feddaoui mixed reduced, raw and cooked ciders, then barrel-aged them for a month with Jim Beam for a drink that's tart, not cloying. After heating, it's topped with a dense layer of pear-puree whipped cream that's so good, the bar should consider serving it solo as dessert.

Violent tornado strikes Taranto, Italy

A large, powerful tornado hit the town of Taranto, Italy earlier today. Tornadoes in Italy happen from time to time but are less common and typically not as strong as those in the United States, and rare in late November.
