Jason Chimera returning to the United States

Capitals forward Jason Chimera will return to the United States Wednesday after a five-game stint with HC Chomutov in the Czech Extraliga, his agent Allan Walsh confirmed.

Chimera, 33, waited until November to look for work in Europe during the lockout because he didn't want to leave his wife and two young children. He ultimately missed his family too much to continue playing overseas while they remained in Alexandria and decided to return, as was first reported by TV Nova Sport in the Czech Republic.

ACC sues Maryland, seeking payment of its exit fee

The Atlantic Coast Conference filed suit against the University of Maryland on Tuesday, asking that the school be forced to pay an exit fee of more than $52 million — a penalty Maryland officials have questioned since announcing last week the school's plans to join the Big Ten.

New Capitals Coach Adam Oates ended a six-week run as co-coach of the Hershey Bears, the team's top minor-league affiliate, last week.

Oates had worked with Hershey Coach Mark French in leading the Bears for the first 16 games of the American Hockey League season, a move General Manager George McPhee made to give Oates and his staff assistants Calle Johansson and Tim Hunter experience working together as a unit while the NHL endures a lockout.

ACC files suit against Maryland in North Carolina court

The ACC has filed suit against Maryland in a North Carolina court, saying the school is bound by the conference's bylaws to pay an exit fee in order to join the Big Ten.

The suit, filed Monday in Greensboro, N.C., points to Maryland President Wallace D. Loh's suspicions that the exit fee equal to three time's the ACC's operating budget isn't legal. The ACC is pursuing a declaratory judgment, essentially asking the court to enforce the rules its members have established.

Jason Babin released by Eagles

In their first major roster move, the Philadelphia Eagles released defensive end Jason Babin today.

Babin's production had fallen in his second season in Philadelphia from 18 sacks to 5.5 and he wasn't expected to be around next year.He signed a five-year, $27.725 million contract before last season and more than $16 million was to come in the next three years (via Pro Football Talk).

Stefon Diggs finishes second in ACC rookie of the year voting

Maryland freshman wide receiver Stefon Diggs finished second in voting for ACC rookie of the year, the league announced Tuesday, receiving 11 out of 46 votes in a poll of ACC media members.

Miami running back Duke Johnson received 34 votes to win the award. Johnson (35 votes) also was named the ACC's offensive rookie of the year. Diggs also finished second in that race, with 10 votes.

DeSean Jackson out for season with broken ribs

Andy Reid will coach the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night, but he won't have DeSean Jackson the rest of the the season.

Jackson, who leads the Eagles with 45 catches for 700 yards, will miss the rest of the season because of fractured ribs that will require about six weeks to heal. Jackson was injured in the first quarter of the Eagles' 30-22 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Monday night.

Another reminder of the escalating stakes and mind-boggling math associated with the Nationals' standoff with MASN over rights fees came this weekend. The Los Angeles Times reported that the Dodgers are in negotiations with Fox Sports that could result in a $6 billion, 25-year television contract. That would work out to Fox paying the Dodgers $240 million per season to broadcast their games or a staggering $1.48 million per game.

Adam Gerloff grew up in Alexandria and has been a Wizards fan for most of his life. Even after moving to New York in 1997, the now 39-year-old stayed loyal. But the recent state of the team has put strain on the long-distance relationship, and before the season started Gerloff decided enough was enough. He was breaking up with the Wizards.

Jamaal Charles asked Peyton Manning for his autograph

Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles has found himself at the center of a controversy because he asked for Peyton Manning's autograph after the Chiefs' 17-9 loss to the Denver on Sunday.

Charles, whose team had just lost its eighth straight game, was shown waiting for Manning in a postgame report onKCTV. "My mom wanted this autograph," he said.

Charles Barkley says Steve Buckhantz deserves hazard pay'

During halftime of the TNT NBA broadcast on Monday night, the studio crew mocked the Wizards, with the help of the Harlem Globetrotters' theme song. Watch that clip here.

But during the postgame show -- after the Wizards were officially 0-12 -- things got even worse. This is high-level, no-regard, no-apologies national ridicule. I don't know that it's necessarily deserved -- I think last year's Wizards team was easily more ridiculous -- but this is happening now.

Robert Griffin III, Alfred Morris nominated for weekly honors

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III and running back Alfred Morris are nominees for NFL Rookie of the Week, and Griffin is in the running for two additional weekly awards.

Griffin earned consideration after completing 20 of 28 passes for 311 yards and four touchdowns, with one interception, in a 38-31 victory over Dallas last Thursday. In the same game, Morris rushed for 113 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries.
