Struggling to stop envying friends
Nov 28th 2012, 22:38

Adapted from a recent online discussion.

Dear Carolyn:

You never seem to have a slow week, but I'm hoping you'll get to my question. How do I force myself to be happy for my friends?

They are all buying houses and taking fabulous vacations, while I am stuck in a studio apartment with no savings and years of student loans. I feel so jealous and angry that I can't fake happiness for them, and my only proposed solution is to avoid them until I feel better.

In other news: Women fight over Hector "Macho" Camacho at boxer's funeral in Puerto Rico
Nov 28th 2012, 21:56

• The funeral of Hector "Macho" Camacho in San Juan, Puerto Rico, was disrupted Tuesday by a dispute between two mourners, both claiming to be the boxing champ's girlfriend. El Nuevo Día reports that Cynthia Castillo arrived at the service, kissed Camacho in his casket, and then walked over to sit in a reserved area for family — which enraged the former world champ's sisters, who were sitting with Gloria Fernández, the woman they recognize as his most recent girlfriend. All four women got into it, reports the newspaper, in a rolling brawl that carried up the aisle and out to the exit. Police got involved, and while Fernández returned to the VIP section, Castillo — wearing a pink t-shirt with a photo of the boxer, who was shot to death last week — left the memorial. "I am the actual girlfriend of Macho," she told reporters outside. "For those who don't like it, you don't have to swallow it."

Jimmy Buffett visits national security staffers at White House
Nov 28th 2012, 17:26

Like the man says, it's 5 o'clock somewhere — even in the Situation Room! The White House's National Security Council staff got an unexpected visit Tuesday afternoon from Jimmy Buffett.

The ever-mellow singer-songwriter — in town, we're told, for the groundbreaking of an education center at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial — greeted the folks who work in the Situation Room and about 20 other national security staffers; also chatted with Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. In jeans and a sweater, the Bard of Happy Hour posed for photos and at one point grabbed a clock off the wall — guess what time it just happened to be when he walked in? Proof, Buffett joked, that it really is 5 o'clock somewhere.

Darryl Carter and the thrill of the hunt
Nov 28th 2012, 17:07

Shopping at Darryl Carter Inc., which opened Saturday in Shaw, is like a treasure hunt through the home of a very tasteful friend.

A wander through the many rooms of the rehabbed 19th-century brick building will uncover handcrafted pottery and custom-bordered napkins from local artisans, twisted-branch floor lamps, corkscrews made of antlers, Swedish sake sets and the designer's own clean-lined sofas and chairs upholstered in oatmeal-colored linen. Peek in a drawer of a massive ,glass-fronted cabinet salvaged from a Georgetown manse and you'll discover a row of beautiful steel and brass textile shears. Walk past farm tables with lightly scented burning candles, a woodsy fragrance based on Carter's own cologne, to the tippity-top level, where whitewashed brick walls and hand-hewn beams set off concrete toothbrush holders, Spanish linen towels and old-fashioned shaving brushes and soap mugs.

Cook Asian pears at your peril
Nov 27th 2012, 21:50

Here's what you end up with when you try three times to make a savory gratin using Asian pears: something else entirely.

In a stubborn attempt to bring a bad idea to fruition, I ignored the advice I often dispensed when I was a restaurant chef. "The reason why this hasn't been done before is because it has been done before," I'd say, leaving the cooks to intuit the rest of the critique. "And it was awful."

Just what is the 'fiscal cliff'?
Nov 27th 2012, 20:16
