Davey Johnson loves the Denard Span trade
Nov 30th 2012, 00:39

Davey Johnson had liked Denard Span for three or four years, but that's not even the first reason he thought General Manager Mike Rizzo pulled off a great deal today when he traded for him. Johnson believes Span's addition gives the Nationals the left-handed bat their lineup needed in the event first baseman Adam LaRoche does not re-sign.

Greetings from Southern California, two days ahead of MLS Cup featuring the Los Angeles Galaxy and Houston Dynamo.

First, some D.C. United news: No need to swap out your replica jersey next season.

The current deal expires Dec. 31. Mayer didn't want to comment on the specific financials but did say the terms have changed. The last contract was worth almost $3 million annually to United.

Washington Wizards' woes merit a creative solution: Hire Gary Williams
Nov 30th 2012, 00:28

The Washington Wizards won a basketball game Wednesday night. Hallelujah.

If they continue at their current pace, they would finish with a worse record than the immortal 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers who managed to go 9-73. No doubt team owner Ted Leonsis will say it's all part of the plan.

No progress in mediation sessions between NHL, NHLPA
Nov 30th 2012, 00:26

The NHL and NHLPA wrapped up two days of sessions with federal mediators Thursday having made no progress toward reaching a new collective bargaining agreement.

"Today, we concluded two days of mediation with FMCS mediators and representatives of the NHL Players' Association," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement. "After spending several hours with both sides over two days, the presiding mediators concluded that the parties remained far apart, and that no progress toward a resolution could be made through further mediation at this point in time. We are disappointed that the mediation process was not successful."

After taking a chance on Kai Forbath, Redskins being rewarded with perfection
Nov 30th 2012, 00:05

When the Washington Redskins chose Kai Forbath over two NFL veterans last month to replace their struggling place kicker, Billy Cundiff, the odds might have seemed stacked decidedly against him.

He never had kicked in an NFL regular season game, and he was joining an organization with a nearly two-decade-old penchant for discarding kickers almost as quickly as it has signed them. Forbath became the Redskins' 20th kicker since the 1994 season. He wasn't even aware at the time of just how daunting his task was.

Denard Span on coming to Washington, how he was born here
Nov 29th 2012, 23:58

On Thursday evening, the Nationals acquired the type of center fielder they have been seeking for years, pulling off a trade for Denard Span from the Minnesota Twins, a leadoff hitter, base stealer and strong defender that General Manager Mike Rizzo has long targeted. While Span admitted in an introductory conference call with reporters soon after the trade was announced that he knows only a little about the District, he has a curious and humorous but little-known connection to the city: he was born here.

Redskins feel very fortunate' to bring Bryan Kehl back
Nov 29th 2012, 21:31

Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan and defensive coordinator Jim Haslett counted themselves as fortunate to have landed inside linebacker Bryan Kehl on waivers on Wednesday.

Washington signed Kehl this past offseason, and he shined during the preseason, recording a team-high 16 tackles, three pass breakups, two sacks and an interception. But he didn't survive final roster cuts because of a numbers crunch. Kehl signed with Kansas City, but played only sparingly, and was released on Tuesday.

Giants' defensive player to watch: DE Osi Umenyiora
Nov 29th 2012, 20:43

How he beats you: Umenyiora may be a little undersized at 6-foot-3, 255 pounds, but the 10th-year veteran has great quickness to go with strength, and good leverage.

"Just very crafty. You can tell he details his work," Redskins left tackle Trent Williams says of Umenyiora, who has five sacks this season. "He's very slippery, very hard to get your hands on, and most of all, he's explosive off the ball. One bad step for him would make it a long night for you and your quarterback."

Arizona for the Nationals' future spring training site? Far less likely
Nov 29th 2012, 20:05

In March of 2011, Nationals principal owner Mark Lerner clearly stated the team's intentions of eventually moving out of Space Coast Stadium in Viera, Fla., because of it's far-flung location and that the team was exploring potential relocation sites elsewhere in the state and Arizona. The Nationals have been interested in the former Boston Red Sox complex in Fort Myers, City of Palms Park on the west coast of Florida and closer to other major league teams in the Grapefruit League, but Lee County's strapped finances could affect the team's interest.

Redskins shutout could lead to free Chevy cars
Nov 29th 2012, 19:34

"Buy a car from Lindsay Chevy between now & Dec 3," read the message from the Lindsay Cars Twitter account. "If the Redskins shut out the Giants Dec 3 your Chevy may be free."

Say what?

"It's the first time that we're doing it," Coslyn Ceballos, Lindsay Chevy's general sales manager, told me on Thursday. "Our general manager is a Redskins fan, and the majority of our sales team are Redskins fans. We were saying, you know, what are the chances of the Redskins making something like that happen? People play the lottery all the time. The chances of hitting the lottery are, what, 1 in 175 million? But it's fun, and it can happen, and if it did, why not make it interesting?

Nationals non-tender decisions looming with deadline near
Nov 29th 2012, 19:33

The deadline to tender contracts to players eligible for arbitration comes Friday at 11:59 p.m., and this year it could mean the Nationals part ways with two of their longest tenured players.

The Nationals are expected to non-tender both starter John Lannan and catcher Jesus Flores, both of whom made their major league debuts for the Nationals in 2009. They could also try to trade either one before the deadline arrives.

Tina Maze takes aim at Lindsey Vonn
Nov 29th 2012, 19:20

There's a hungry young skier nipping at Lindsey Vonn's heels, challenging the reigning overall World Cup champion.

Maze, the 29-year-old Slovenian skier, is the overall leader in World Cup standings early in the season and has come close to winning an overall crown in recent seasons. But Vonn has been standing in the way, winning four of the last five titles. This year, though, Vonn has been weakened by an intestinal illness that could open the door for Maze.

Jordan Crawford says Wizards have best fans in the NBA
Nov 29th 2012, 18:47

Every athlete on every team in every city in every sport is required to say that his/her city's fan base is the best in the world. Written into contracts.

Still, I don't remember hearing that said about Wizards fans before. Weird quirk. Jordan Crawford, at least, went there on Wednesday night, following Washington's first win.
