In other news: Ruth Bader Ginsburg's bling; Jenna Bush Hager's new job
Nov 26th 2012, 21:54

Time to bust out your holiday-season bling — and that goes for you Supreme Court justices, too! Ruth Bader Ginsburg turned some heads Monday when she showed up in court wearing a big shiny necklace with her robe instead of her usual frilly white jabot. We're told that the bib-style sparkler (glass beads on a black scalloped base) was a Banana Republic offering that came in the VIP gift bag at Glamour magazine's "Women of the Year" gala in New York this month, where Ginsburg was among the honorees. (Sorry, no photo: Cameras aren't allowed in the court.)

Quoted: Carla Bruni on feminism and the simple life
Nov 26th 2012, 19:20

"There's no need to be feminist in my generation. There were already pioneers who opened doors. I am not a feminist activist. Instead, I am bourgeois."

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy in a new interview with French Vogue. No, Carla: We are bourgeois. You are a jet-setting supermodel/pop star /former first lady. But she insists she's just a gal of simple tastes and habits. ("I love family life, I love doing the same thing every day.") Also makes news by noting that, unlike her conservative husband Nicolas Sarkozy, she supports a move in France to make gay marriage legal.

Craft brewing reawakens in Japan
Nov 26th 2012, 17:55

On a recent night at H Street's Toki Underground, the aromas of braised pork and ramen broth melded with the grapefruit, lemon and pine wafting from my beer glass. Other interesting stories in The Washington Post:

R.I.P. Larry Hagman. Son of a Broadway legend who hit the road when he was an infant, he grew up into the most loveable TV villain of all times, and also a delightful eccentric, according to a fascinating obituary. Did you know that in his hard-drinking days, "he once poured bourbon on his cornflakes"? Or that he refused to speak aloud on Sundays? Or that he used to lead "impromptu ragtag parades [in] outlandish costumes" on Malibu Beach? What a man.

Surgeon performs controversial cancer surgery named after him
Nov 25th 2012, 23:04

Paul Sugarbaker takes an even breath, leans over the left side of his patient and slices her iodine-coated abdomen from pelvis to ribs.

The air of the red-and-pink-tiled Operating Room 1 of MedStar Washington Hospital Center is chilly and smells of antiseptic; the only sound comes from the beep-beep-beep of the heart monitor as a digital clock on the wall flips silently from 11:09 to 11:10 a.m. In just five seconds, the surgeon completes the 12-inch incision, beginning what will be a marathon operation that he hopes will rid his patient of cancer.
