Jennifer Rubin: What to do about Grover?
Nov 27th 2012, 15:30

The Wall Street Journal editorial board defends anti-tax maven Grover Norquist and buries the lede. As many fiscal conservatives do, the Journal's board defends Norquist on the grounds that lawmakers who took the no-tax pledge must answer to voters (indisputably). Then seven graphs down comes this:

Jennifer Rubin: Rice might get confirmed, but not a pass
Nov 27th 2012, 14:45

Eli Lake reports, "On Tuesday, Sen. John McCain says he'll sit down face to face in a secure room at the Capital with Susan Rice, the woman he had previously vowed to oppose if she's nominated as the next secretary of state. In an interview, McCain told The Daily Beast that Rice herself requested the meeting after McCain made several statements suggesting she misled the American people about the Benghazi attacks when she went on several Sunday talk shows on September 16, five days after the assault." The request is an indication the president knows he has a problem with a potential confirmation hearing that cannot be swept away by bluster at a news conference.

Grover Norquist and Susan Rice: Odd couple in the news
Nov 27th 2012, 14:30

Today, three Republican senators will meet with U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice. Rice famously said some incorrect things about the circumstances surrounding the tragedy in Benghazi.  Her comments were probably at least partially shaped by her desire to be a partisan political participant and not limit herself to diplomacy. It appears that she wanted her colleagues to escape any responsibility for what happened, so she peddled a not-quite-true version of what sparked the attack.

Greg Sargent: The Morning Plum: Will taking it to the people work for Obama?
Nov 27th 2012, 13:51

Here we go: Obama is getting ready to mount more public pressure on Republicans to pass an extension of just the tax cuts for those under $250,000 — and reach a deal on the fiscal cliff.

A White House official says Obama will meet today with small business owners. He'll host another event tomorrow with middle class Americans facing the expiration of the Bush tax cuts. On Friday Obama will tour a toy manufacturing plant in Pennsylvania that may take a hit if middle class taxes go up and holiday consumption drops.

Jennifer Rubin: More turmoil in the Middle East
Nov 27th 2012, 13:30

The Jerusalem Post reports: "Defense Minister Ehud Barak announced his resignation from political life on Monday, saying his final decision was delayed by Operation Pillar of Defense and hinting at the possibility of being appointed to his post again after the January election." But don't count Barak out permanently. He may wind up with nearly as many retirements as Brett Favre. As the report observes, "This is the second time Barak is resigning from politics. The first followed his loss of the premiership to Ariel Sharon in 2001. In 2002, Barak went into business, becoming a multi-millionaire, and returned to politics five years later as defense minister under then-prime minister Ehud Olmert."

Jennifer Rubin: Morning Bits
Nov 27th 2012, 12:45

You saw this coming. "Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell called Majority Leader Harry Reid's plan to end filibusters a 'naked power grab' and an 'affront to the American people' Monday. He encouraged members 'on both sides' to oppose Reid's proposal 'strenuously and loudly.'" For a party that can't pass a budget requiring 50 votes and jammed Obamacare through on "reconciliation" perhaps it should try doing its job under the current rules.

Mashed potatoes may be the missing glue
Nov 27th 2012, 12:15

I just had my first Turkeyless Thankgiving. This was unexpected. I actually LIKE turkey, yes the FLAVOR of turkey, something I know has not been scientifically proven to actually exist.

But a Turkeyless Thanksgiving was inevitable, I guess, given the nature of my family and their complete, and I do mean complete indifference to tradition. It's not rebellious RESISTANCE to tradition, or defiant OVERTURNING of the old order. No, nothing as revolutionary or high-spirited as that. Nobody but me likes turkey, so the menu got changed. As simple as that. Is browned CAULIFLOWER a Thanksgiving favorite? I don't know, but there it was. It was good. The whole meal was good. The conversation was good. The traditions were not invited. I'm wondering now if the day itself is in danger of being not celebrated sometime in the future, as people might just not be reading the calendar that year.

Matt Miller: Warren Buffett's mistake
Nov 27th 2012, 12:12

I hate to pick a fight with the sage of Omaha, but in an otherwise admirable New York Times op-ed Monday that offered a new version of his idea for a minimum tax for the wealthy, Warren Buffett embraced (inadvertently, I'm guessing) spending and revenue goals for the federal government that would kill any agenda for American renewal in its cradle. Because Buffett's voice is so sane and generally credible — especially with businesspeople and with President Obama — his proposed targets, if influential, could prove damaging. For the reasons I'm about to lay out, I hope he'll rethink.
