Redlined school boundaries around wealthy neighborhoods keep out less privileged students. Closed streets and parking restrictions make for a "walkable city." For the low-income resident who must travel longer distances to get to work and stores, a better description would be "trudge town."

Robbery before Woodley Park Metro stabbing was a setup by teens, authorities say

The robbery that led to an 18-year-old's fatal stabbing on a Metro platform was part of a setup concocted by a group of teens armed with knives and a handgun, authorities say.

According to court documents made available Tuesday, authorities investigating the Nov. 17 death of Olijawon Griffin found a .45-caliber handgun and two knives behind a locker in the Woodley Park Metro station.

Rich Noland resigns as Bethesda Chevy-Chase football coach

Bethesda Chevy-Chase football coach Rich Noland resigned Tuesday, just three weeks after leading the Barons to their second consecutive appearance in the Maryland 4A playoffs.

Noland said Tuesday evening that he wanted to spend more time with his two children, aged 9 and 12, during the season. He notified athletic director Jim Tapley on Tuesday morning of his decision and met with players later that afternoon.

A District man was sentenced Tuesday to 120 days in jail — 30 days longer than prosecutors had requested — for dropping a boulder on the head of a sleeping puppy.

Sean Delontay Branch, 24, had pleaded guilty to one count of felony cruelty to animals in September in connection with the June killing of the 6-month-old dog known as "King Tut" behind a Northeast Washington convenience store.

UPDATE, 6:30 p.m.: The Prince William Board of Supervisors did vote to close its internal auditor's office. Chairman Stewart said the office was his "brainchild" but wasn't working efficiently, and using a large outside firm with "an army of auditors" would be better. Supervisor Frank Principi was the only no vote, saying it returned the county to the situation of the 2000s where embezzlement went unchecked.

Obenshain announces bid for attorney general

State Sen. Mark D. Obenshain on Tuesday formally announced his bid for Virginia attorney general, an office his late father, Richard Obenshain, sought unsuccessfully in 1969.

At a Capitol Square news conference, Obenshain (R-Harrisonburg) quoted from a scrap of paper found in his father's desk in 1978, not long after the elder Obenshain died in a plane crash while campaigning as the GOP's U.S. Senate nominee.
