| Editorial Board: Post's endorsement: Vote no on Ballot Question 1 in Va. Nov 1st 2012, 23:28 VIRGINIA LAWMAKERS, in thrall to special interests, are asking voters to approve a state constitutional amendment that would cost state and local governments and taxpayers tens of millions of dollars annually in giveaways to private landowners and businesses. This staggering act of corporate welfare — as proposed in Question 1 on the ballot Virginia voters will cast Nov. 6 — would go far beyond current law in any other state. Virginians should vote no on Question 1. Since then, according to unofficial counts, there have been more than 400 "targeted killing" drone attacks in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia — countries where the United States is not fighting a conventional war. About 3,000 people have been killed, including scores — maybe hundreds — of civilians. And though the United States is winding down its military mission in Afghanistan, the Obama administration, as The Post's Greg Miller reported last week, "expects to continue adding names to kill or capture lists for years." The miserable state of the economy, they claimed, restricted the options for President Obama's reelection strategy. He could still win. "But the kind of campaign required for the president's political survival," they said, "would make it almost impossible for him to govern — not only during the campaign, but throughout a second term. Put simply, it seems that the White House has concluded that if the president cannot run on his record, he will need to wage the most negative campaign in history to stand any chance." It was, for all the unpleasant circumstances, a nice communal moment. That was Barack Obama in 2008. And he was right. Reagan was an ideological inflection point, ending a 50-year liberal ascendancy and beginning a 30-year conservative ascendancy. It is not just as simple as Obama having a commander-in-chief moment and reminding people that the federal government matters and as forcing Mitt Romney to answer for his call for cuts for FEMA. Yes, those things reinforce the Obama side of that argument. But the storm also reminds us of something more. What has struck me especially is the competence and courage of the members of the Coast Guard, who rescued 14 people from the HMS Bounty under incredibly violent weather conditions ["Tall ship meets its end in storm-ravaged seas," front page, Oct. 30]. Pilot Steve Bonn, rescue swimmer Daniel Todd and the two other rescuers (whom I wish had been named in the article) are heroes, as is the whole Coast Guard Search and Rescue organization. They do this stuff every day, usually in horrible situations, and would probably tell you it is just part of their job. Through much research, the predictions of storm movement and strength have improved in recent decades. But I know that Pepco is acting responsibly. When my power went off at midnight Tuesday, my first thought was that I would be without power for days. I was, mentally, disposing of food. Superstorm Sandy reminds us that climate change doesn't just melt far-off polar caps and glaciers — it can hit us right at home. The effects on our economy are undeniable, and the potential effects make fiscal cliffs, taxes and budget cuts trivial in comparison. The cause is not obvious, but accumulating scientific evidence points to carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels. Since this is a global problem of economic consequence, it is time once again for the United States to rise to its historic role as world leader. Mr. Sheinin offers hope that Robert Griffin III's influence for good can spread beyond football, as we of whatever race watch this exciting young football player and see precisely and only that. When my wife and I visit Washington (and everywhere else, for that matter) every few months, we drive at a reasonable speed and stop when the traffic lights turn red, and I've never received a ticket from a camera. As with Scotland today, that country was resource-rich and filled with potential but was held back by a distant government in London. Somehow, that small country overcame the odds to become one of the most powerful nations in the world. As an American who works for a leader of the Scottish National Party, I know that an independent Scotland would be a successful nation that would contribute much to the world.
