Dulles may close one runway to accommodate inauguration-bound private planes

Most will come by train, by foot or by bus. More than a few, though, will arrive in inaugural Washington by private plane.

And the region's biggest airport is looking to roll out the concrete carpet for the high-flying arrivals. Officials at Dulles International may close the airport's westernmost runway to accommodate hundreds of private planes expected to descend on the region over the next few days.

Switch problem causes major delays on Metro Red Line

Commuters experienced major delays during Wednesday morning's rush hour on Metro's Red Line, the busiest in the system, because of a track hazard near the Judiciary Square station.

An inspection vehicle known as a Sperry car detected a problem about 3 a.m., when the system was closed to passengers.

Costco is among first to seek Sunday liquor sales

District alcohol authorities today started taking applications from liquor retailers who want to sell their wares on Sundays for the first time.

Five businesses are eager enough to do so that they submitted applications on Day 1. Among them is the District's newest mega-retailer, Costco, which sells a full selection of beer, wine and liquor at its Fort Lincoln big box.

Eighteen charged in bust of drug ring that worked in area

Eighteen men were arrested Tuesday on charges of operating a drug ring that spanned four states, moving large quantities of of marijuana through Anne Arundel and Howard Counties since 2010.

Authorities said perhaps 250 federal and local law enforcement agents arrested the alleged conspirators, seizing at least 30 vehicles, 60 pounds of marijuana, $300,000 in cash and 35 firearms. Agents searched a total of 23 residences and businesses — 17 in Maryland, five in New Jersey and one in California.

Inauguration Day transit, transportation changes

Monday will be an unusual day for travel in the region, because the presidential inauguration and the federal Martin Luther King Jr. holiday both fall on the same day. The inauguration will require multiple road and bridge closures in and around the District, while Metro is planning for extended rail service and preparing for bus service changes. But the holiday means that many transit systems will run limited schedules or offer no service at all.

A bit of beach in D.C. on a dreary day: Jetties, the sandwich and salad spot that has long held court in Foxhall, opened a new location today near 20th and I streets NW. The preppy, ocean-themed spot maintains nearly the same soup-salad-sandwich menu as its other locations (Bethesda, Glover Park and Georgetown), with menu items inspired by Nantucket beaches and owner Bo Blair's other restaurants, including Surfside and Smith Point. A huge, cheery seascape mural stretches across the seating area.

A storm passing to our south may give the area a period of snow tomorrow afternoon and evening. Precipitation could start in the morning across the far southwestern suburbs. The storm has the potential to produce shovelable snow accumulations but also has the potential to skirt us to the south giving us only light precipitation or even none at all.
