Jan 23rd 2013, 00:35

A controversy over whether Beyoncé lip-synched the "Star Spangled Banner" during the inaugural ceremony is headed into a third day. Should this even be a controversy?

The pop superstar delivered a dramatic and critically hailed rendition of the national anthem — but was it live? Or the pre-recorded version she taped at a Marine Corps studio Sunday night?

KidsPost wants winter weather drawings
Jan 22nd 2013, 22:11

Last month, KidsPost asked our readers to draw winter weather art for our daily weather forecast. And you came through: We got pictures of snowmen, of snowball fights, of snow forts, of blizzards.

The only problem is that we haven't had much (or any!) snow. So we're asking for cold-weather art (think mittens, hot chocolate, blustery winds). We're hoping that by putting this in the paper, we'll bring on a blizzard that will let us use those snowy drawings!

Math museum adds up for kids
Jan 22nd 2013, 22:07

Squealing schoolchildren ride a square-wheeled tricycle and a "Coaster Roller" that glides over plastic acorns. Downstairs, they fit monkey magnets together at the "Tessellation Station."

This is how math is presented at New York City's new National Museum of Mathematics, the only museum of its kind in the United States and a place where math is anything but boring.

Prepping Balkan cuisine for its Capitol Hill debut
Jan 22nd 2013, 19:49

Several days into an August trip to eat his way through the Balkans, Richard Sandoval lost his faith. The Mexican chef, the man with more than 25 restaurants to his name, was close to pulling the plug on his latest project: a Balkan-themed eatery on Capitol Hill that he was planning with Ivan Iricanin, a native Serb who is also a partner in two other Sandoval establishments in the District.

'August: Osage County' is fitting opener for Everyman Theatre's new space
Jan 22nd 2013, 19:33

Can you really dare to open a new theater these days with a 31 / 2-hour marathon? Can you risk producing a play — not a musical — that requires 13 actors? Can you bet all your chips on something as quaint, and something so nearly extinct in the American theater, as an acting company?

Late-night at the White House: After the official inaugural balls, the Obamas party at home
Jan 22nd 2013, 19:29

The advantage of only two official inaugural balls? An early night.

The Obamas got back to the White House Monday night a little after 10 p.m., which left them plenty of time to celebrate at a private, late-night bash in the executive mansion for top donors, staff, and several selected celebrities. The exclusive party was not covered by the White House press, but John Legend, Katy Perry, and Kelly Clarkson were among those helpfully tweeting out news.

First lady Michelle Obama serves as fashion icon
Jan 22nd 2013, 03:22

First lady Michelle Obama stood on the steps of the U.S. Capitol during President Obama's second-term swearing-in, holding the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s black leather Bible in her magenta-gloved hands. The smaller Lincoln Bible rested atop it. Michelle Obama said nothing during the hour-long inaugural ceremony. But in the sea of black topcoats and C-SPAN stodginess, she stood out — statuesque bearing, new bangs accentuating her cheekbones, and grooming attuned to both the history books and high-definition TV.

Inaugural crowds corralled on the Mall to witness history
Jan 22nd 2013, 00:55

The morning sky soufflés up over the Capitol, pushing apart the last indigo smear of night. Sirens whoop-whoop in the 7 o'clock hour, waking a city of ceremonies to its elemental formality. The furs begin to emerge from hibernation and lumber their fancy way downtown, where they will graze in America's Front Yard, which this holiday weekend is more corral than esplanade. Nowhere but a presidential inauguration can a citizen feel both like a patriot imbued with the unfolding glories of civilization's greatest nation and like a sheep. Or a cow. Liberty and livestock, together on the Mall on Monday.
