Chris Ault had an idea and a few notes. He had been athletic director at the University of Nevada, and in 2005 he was resuming his job as the football team's head coach, a position he had previously held twice. Now it was time to bring life to a new offense that had been bouncing around his mind.

MLS, USL reach development deal
Jan 23rd 2013, 23:44

The partnership between Major League Soccer and USL PRO, the third division in the pro pyramid, is a much-needed arrangement that promises to improve MLS's long-term player development.

MLS's inadequate reserve league prompted the move. For years, many young MLS players have languished without practical experience. They would train with the full squad but weren't exposed to authentic competition. Often, reserve matches were postponed or guest players were summoned on short notice to fill out rosters. Games were usually played on weekday afternoons in front of small crowds.

Jan 23rd 2013, 22:33

The soundtrack of recent Washington area girls' basketball seasons has not been tweets of whistles, squeaks of sneakers or roars of crowds. It's been the popping of knee ligaments and the clang of crutches tapping aluminum courtside chairs as injured players plop into seats on the bench.

Analysis: Washington Capitals can't forget fundamentals while learning new system
Jan 23rd 2013, 21:17

This is what the Washington Capitals can afford over the next month, by which time their season will be nearly a third over: A player out of position. A misunderstanding about what Coach Adam Oates wants. A miscommunication between two players, each with a different interpretation of Oates's new system. A goal allowed because of any or all of that.

The Caps' National Anthem duet
Jan 23rd 2013, 20:53

The Caps' home opener maybe wasn't the world's biggest success, on the ice, at least.

But, among other highlights, fans seemed to get a pretty good kick out of the pre-game National Anthem, which was a duet between longtime singers Caleb Green and Bob McDonald. My colleague Benjamin Sumner reports that this was the first time Green and McDonald had done such a duet at a Caps game, although they've performed it in a quartet, and done the duet at a Hershey Bears game.

Manti Te'o hoax has more culprits than victims
Jan 23rd 2013, 20:28

What, are we going to have an athlete provide a nationally televised apology to a well-known broadcaster every week now? If so, I have a short list of candidates, and I'm sure you do, too.

ESPN's Jeremy Schaap got Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o first, although off-camera, and because the World Wide Leader is so great at branding, can "ESPN: Confessional" be far behind?

Jan 23rd 2013, 18:25

The family of Junior Seau has filed a lawsuit against the NFL, alleging that he committed suicide because of brain disease caused by repeated violent hits over the course of his football career.

The wrongful death lawsuit was filed Wednesday in California Superior Court in San Diego, where Seau committed suicide last May by shooting himself in the chest. It alleges, according to the Associated Press, that the NFL, though "acts or omissions," hid the dangers of repetitive blows to the head.
