Mali is about to have a refugee crisis

The refugees fleeing Mali tell aid agencies that they have seen executions and amputations, have had family members "disappear" and have seen rebel armies recruiting children.

Mali has seen an increase in both internal and external refugees over the past year -- ever since Islamists moved into the northern regions and imposed harsh sharia law, with forced marriages, amputations and public whippings. But after the French military entered Mali to try to drive out the Islamists, there's been an uptick in the number of people crossing into neighboring countries almost 1,500 have crossed into Niger, Mauritania and Burkina Faso since last week, according to the UN Refugee Agency.

Algerian hostage crisis throws spotlight on spillover of Libyan war

CAIRO — The hostage standoff at an Algerian gas field has thrown a fresh spotlight on the spillover unleashed by the 2011 war that toppled Moammar Gaddafi in Libya.

Experts say the vast quantities of weapons and fighters that streamed out of Gaddafi's arsenals may have served as a catalyst for the region's expanding crisis.

U.S. sends trainers for Mali-bound force

The United States has dispatched about 100 military trainers to six nations that will contribute troops to a pan-African force being prepared for deployment to Mali, the State Department said Friday.

The initial U.S. trainers will "discuss training and equipping and deployment needs of those countries in the interest of getting them ready to go into Mali," spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

Holder urges mayors to press for background checks for gun buyers

Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. urged the nation's mayors Friday to support President Obama's plan to require a background check for everyone who buys a firearm in the United States.

In his most extensive remarks about gun control, Holder called on mayors to push for "immediate congressional action" that would force gun-show and private gun sellers to fully check the backgrounds of all their customers.
