Inaugural balls give Obama fans chance to party
Jan 23rd 2013, 05:52

The enormity of the occasion met the enormity of the room.

Like, wowza. What a room!

Acres of concrete floor at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center to sashay across in gowns and heels, to clippity-clop around in tuxes and shiny dress shoes. All in search of that special "I-was-there" moment, an inauguration night when a city consumed by its quarrels stopped its sniping for a few, and just smiled.

D.C. area forecast: Winter works overtime with cold blast and Friday snow chance
Jan 22nd 2013, 10:00

Well. Apparently winter is trying to seriously make up for lost time this week by hitting us hard with a strong Arctic air mass, whipping up the wind chills to a most unpleasant level, pushing overnight temperatures to levels not seen in at least two years, and even queuing up a possible winter weather maker for Friday.

First lady Michelle Obama serves as fashion icon
Jan 22nd 2013, 03:22

First lady Michelle Obama stood on the steps of the U.S. Capitol during President Obama's second-term swearing-in, holding the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s black leather Bible in her magenta-gloved hands. The smaller Lincoln Bible rested atop it. Michelle Obama said nothing during the hour-long inaugural ceremony. But in the sea of black topcoats and C-SPAN stodginess, she stood out — statuesque bearing, new bangs accentuating her cheekbones, and grooming attuned to both the history books and high-definition TV.

Jan 22nd 2013, 02:30

Inaugural crowds corralled on the Mall to witness history
Jan 22nd 2013, 00:55

The morning sky soufflés up over the Capitol, pushing apart the last indigo smear of night. Sirens whoop-whoop in the 7 o'clock hour, waking a city of ceremonies to its elemental formality. The furs begin to emerge from hibernation and lumber their fancy way downtown, where they will graze in America's Front Yard, which this holiday weekend is more corral than esplanade. Nowhere but a presidential inauguration can a citizen feel both like a patriot imbued with the unfolding glories of civilization's greatest nation and like a sheep. Or a cow. Liberty and livestock, together on the Mall on Monday.

Farmworkers travel to D.C. to keep spotlight on immigration
Jan 22nd 2013, 00:27

Most of President Obama's inaugural address was inaudible on the faulty Jumbotron at the Washington Monument, but toward the end one snippet came through clearly: "Our journey is not complete until we find a better way to welcome the striving, hopeful immigrants who still see America as a land of opportunity."
