Jan 22nd 2013, 01:26

The Harbaugh vs. Harbaugh matchup is definitely the most intriguing story line of the Baltimore-San Francisco Super Bowl. That's what happens when head coaching brothers — Baltimore's John and San Francisco's Jim — meet for the first time in the NFL's biggest event. And the guts the Harbaughs displayed in leading their teams to the championship game should only add to the interest.

Terps seek to reclaim offensive mojo: 'It's all gone bad at once'
Jan 21st 2013, 22:55

The numbers aren't pretty. Four Maryland guards are shooting under 30 percent from three-point range this season. Trips to the free throw line have dipped during conference play. Even Logan Aronhalt hasn't made a three-pointer in the past two games, and when your sharpshooting, shining example of consistency is experiencing a slump, the issue is officially widespread.

Low scores and parity in ACC basketball
Jan 21st 2013, 22:41

Coach Roy Williams returned to his alma mater 10 years ago, seeking to restore a struggling North Carolina program to its former glory. Since then, he has seen three national champions come from the ACC — two of them Tar Heel teams — six Final Four appearances by ACC members and 12 coaching changes. But this season the conference just might be the most balanced since he returned.

Soccer and society
Jan 21st 2013, 21:09

Seeing RFK Stadium, D.C. United's home, in the backdrop of aerial views during President Obama's inauguration ceremony Monday -- 20 blocks directly behind the Capitol on East Capitol Street -- reminds us that soccer and society intersect in America more often than one thinks.

A Charlottesville police spokesman confirmed Monday that Virginia Beach running back Taquan Mizzell was arrested on charges of underage possession of alcohol on Sunday morning around 2:30 a.m., on the 100 block of 14th Street near campus. Tom Brady slide: Was it a dirty play?

Super Bowl XLVII: Joe Flacco or Colin Kaepernick will join elite quarterback fraternity
Jan 21st 2013, 18:14

In less than two weeks, the club will have a new member, and just in time, because the group was beginning to look like an old boys' network.

Either the Baltimore Ravens' Joe Flacco or the San Francisco 49ers' Colin Kaepernick will soon be a Super Bowl champion, a member of the NFL's most elite fraternity. In the last 11 Super Bowls, the Vince Lombardi Trophy has been passed around among seven quarterbacks. New England's Tom Brady has three and the New York Giants' Eli Manning and Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger each have two titles. Peyton Manning, Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers each have one, along with former Tampa Bay quarterback Brad Johnson.

Jan 21st 2013, 17:52

The Capitals made a pair of roster moves Monday, placing defenseman Jack Hillen on injured reserve and recalling prospect Tomas Kundratek from the AHL's Hershey Bears.

Hillen, who is formally listed as week-to-week, did not finish the season opener Saturday night in Tampa Bay after a check from Vincent Lecavalier sent him crashing hard into the end boards. The 5-10, 190-pound blue-liner went off favoring his left shoulder, which took the brunt of the impact.

Jan 21st 2013, 15:50

The Capitals are back on the ice for practice Monday morning following an off day on Sunday. Their forward lines remain the same as they were last week.

The only players not taking part in the workout are Brooks Laich (groin) and defenseman Jack Hillen, who left the season opener at Tampa Bay after he was checked into the boards shoulder-first by Lightning captain Vincent Lecavalier. After the game, Coach Adam Oates said Hillen suffered an upper-body injury.

Super Bowl XLVII: Harbaugh vs. Harbaugh
Jan 21st 2013, 15:24

Oh, those Harboys. Good Lord, they must have been a handful.

You may have read something about this, but the Harbaugh brothers, John and Jim, have managed to coach their respective teams to Super Bowl XLVII. Separated by only 15 months, their dad, Jack, says they were more like twins than brothers. When they'd fight, Jack would draw a line down their room and tell them not to cross it. Which, of course, they did immediately.

Undaunted by criticism and his past, Joe Flacco leads Ravens into Super Bowl XLVII
Jan 21st 2013, 04:34

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Unacknowledged as a real counterpart to Tom Brady, unconvincing in his quest for platinum membership in the NFL quarterback club, unemotional, unfunny — often unloved by many of his own fans — Joe Flacco walked into Gillette Stadium with dubious distinction as the quarterback with the most playoff victories who had never been to the Super Bowl.
