Washington Wizards aren't fixed, but they might not be a tear-down project

In their first 32 games, the Washington Wizards were 4-28. In the past seven games, they are 5-2. Just in the past two weeks, it's pretty clear what they've been missing so badly this season: another lockout to cancel the first two months of the season.

Braden Holtby gets the nod in net for Washington and will be opposed by Ondrej Pavelec for Winnipeg. Diversity group seeks expansion of NFL's Rooney Rule to cover coordinator jobs

The watchdog group that oversees diversity in NFL hiring has asked the league to expand the sport's minority interviewing rule to cover most vacancies for offensive and defensive coordinator jobs.

The request by leaders of the Fritz Pollard Alliance in a letter to NFL officials dated Saturday and released Tuesday, comes after no minority candidates were hired for any of the eight head coaching jobs or seven general manager vacancies recently filled by NFL teams.

NHL makes rule changes on handling the puck, faceoffs

With the dawn of every new season, it's not unusual for the NHL to add new rules and clarify enforcement guidelines for various infractions.

In addition to updating details on interference, holding, hooking, slashing, faceoff interference, diving/embellishment and what is considered an "attainable pass" to negate an icing call, the league has instituted two rules regarding players' ability to handle the puck. Terps women lose another starter -- Tierney Pfirman -- to injury

The 10th-ranked Maryland women's basketball team will be without starting forward Tierney Pfirman for at least one month after the freshman suffered a dislocated right kneecap Saturday.

Pfirman was injured after a knee-to-knee collision in practice before the team departed for Atlanta to play Georgia Tech Sunday. The Terrapins (15-3, 6-1 ACC) won that game, 66-57, with a roster of eight available players, although only seven participated against the Yellow Jackets.

What had been WNEW-AM on 1580, covering government and business news, will now become SportsRadio 1580. The new station will run national CBS Sports Radio content 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Ray Lewis and Michael Phelps: An unusual friendship between Baltimore's brightest stars

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Ray Lewis's cubicle, near a back doorway in the visitors' locker room at Gillette Stadium, was a hub of activity Sunday night. A couple stalls down, Terrell Suggs sang and whooped and hollered, and Lewis answered his every call, sing-songing right back. Men with celebratory cigars walked through in suits, and Lewis shouted after them as he packed his bag and pulled on his suit, the unmistakable scent of victory in the air.

Washington out for '15 All-Star Game; maybe in '17?

Nationals Park opened in 2008, and as recent history shows, new stadiums often get to host all-star games. The Nationals have been pushing to host the midsummer classic, potentially angling for the 2015 game, but according to a report in the Cincinnati Enquirer and the Associated Press, Cincinnati will host the 2015 game, leaving 2017 as the soonest potential year for Washington.

Tiger Woods understands Phil Mickelson's position on taxes

Tiger Woods wasn't about to say anything controversial about Phil Mickelson or anything else today.

After a golf gaffe prematurely ended play for him in Abu Dhabi last week, he will kick off the 2013 season Thursday in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. During a press conference today, Woods, who grew up in California was asked about Mickelson promising "drastic changes" because of the changing federal and California tax codes. Mickelson has apologized for his statements.

D.C. United drafts UCLA attacker

D.C. United chose UCLA midfielder Evan Raynr in the MLS supplemental draft Tuesday, the club's only selection in the four-round process.

Raynr -- an attacking midfielder considered by the Bruins coaching staff as the team's most technical player -- had three goals and 10 assists in 16 appearances last season and was a second-team all-Pacific 12 selection. He led the conference in assists.

Torrey Smith says Patriots fans taunted him about dead brother

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith managed to have a breakout season despite the death of his younger brother, whom he'd helped raise, in a motorcycle accident in September.

Smith played against the New England Patriots on Sept. 24, the day after his brother's death, and was the target of taunts from fans before that game. Undaunted, he caught six passes for 127 yards and scored two touchdowns in the Ravens' 31-30 victory. When the Ravens played the Patriots on Sunday for the AFC championship, he found that little had changed.

Both Theodore Roosevelt and West Charlotte's benches cleared during the third quarter of Monday's Martin Luther King Hoopfest contest at Coolidge High School, and in the middle of the skirmish was Rough Riders' guard Johnnie Shuler. He was pulling teammates back, and when officials regained control and play resumed about 10 minutes later, it was the junior putting his index finger to his temple, trying to tell teammates to be smarter.
