Higher tax rates on top earners will pinch married couples faster than individuals

It pays to be single — that is, when it comes to high earners' tax bills.

U.S. taxpayers with income of more than $200,000 a year will see federal tax rates rise this year on wages and investments. Tax increases will pinch married couples faster than individuals, especially if both spouses work and have capital gains and dividend income, said Joseph Perry, partner-in-charge of tax and business services at the accounting firm Marcum.

Even before the struggle over the debt ceiling, Obama and the newly ascendant Republicans engage in the first of multiple showdowns over spending.

Joseph R. Biden Jr., vice president (2009-present): I thought we should have let them shut the government down, let them have a taste of what it was. I think we would have been in a stronger position. I was in the minority on that. If we could take a position back — I don't know, the president might agree with me. I know he wondered about it. I think it would have been better to have them face the music right then and there.

Eugene Jarecki is a documentary maker whose previous works include "The Trials of Henry Kissinger" and "Why We Fight." His most recent film is "The House I Live In," a blistering critique of the conduct of the drug war and especially of its impact on poor and minority communities. We spoke in Shiloh Baptist Church in Shaw, Washington, D.C., where today he is hosting a screening of his film at 1 p.m., which will be live-streamed to churches and other venues across the nation.
