The students pull back brambles, trim branches and press flour into tombstones carved a century or more ago. They are trying to uncover the details of the lives of some of the early African American residents of this small Frederick County town.

Crowds fill Washington for inauguration

On a day many said was freighted with history, hope and a sober sense of realism, large crowds massed in Washington Monday to witness the second inauguration of President Obama.

It turned out to be a relatively mild Inauguration Day, with mid-40s in the District to around 50 degrees just south of town. It will be at least a week until it is this warm again as arctic air is on the brink of spilling into the area. Highs hold in the 20s Tuesday and wind chills will be in the single digits and teens!

Giant TV at Washington Monument fails as inaugural ceremony starts

Just as the heart of the presidential inaugural events got underway Monday, at least one of the massive television monitor upon which most of the crowd depended for their views of the ceremony failed.

Murmured boos and groans sounded throughout the massive crowd gathered on the Washington Monument grounds as the TV grew suddenly garbled and pixilated during the opening remarks delivered by Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.). The screen went black, blinked back to life, then went dark again - flashing only intermittent images and bursts of sound at an increasingly disgruntled crowd.
