Russian crime boss gunned down in Moscow

MOSCOW — One of Russia's biggest criminal bosses — call him the country's Don Corleone — was gunned down in the center of Moscow on Wednesday as he left his favorite hangout surrounded by bodyguards.

Aslan Usoyan, a 75-year-old gangster known as Grandpa Khasan, was hit by a sniper perched on the sixth floor of an apartment building, shot in the head with a round from a silenced assault rifle, the Russian Investigative Committee said in a statement. He died at a hospital, leaving behind a nephew he was grooming for succession and the prospect of a bloody turf war.

BAZHOU, China — What a difference a year makes for China's high-speed rail ambitions, and for the Chinese economy.

After being abandoned and left to lie dormant, the scrubby farm fields around Bazhou, in northern China, have sprouted rail bridges, elevated track beds and neat rows of workers' dormitories. The fields are well on their way to becoming a link in the country's rapidly expanding high-speed rail network.

In France, the Mali intervention is more popular than gay marriage

French troops in armored vehicles are preparing for what seems like their first major engagement on the ground in Mali, according to reports from the Post's Edward Cody.

Although the French are not well known for supporting the use of armed force, three-quarters of the French public supports President Francois Hollande's decision to send troops to Mali, according to a poll released Tuesday by French polling firm BVA.

VATICAN CITY — Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta took a break Wednesday from war planning and leading the world's most powerful military to pay his respects to Pope Benedict XVI, a champion of peace.

Panetta, an observant Catholic who proudly wears his Italian American heritage on his sleeve, beamed as he sat in a front row reserved for VIPs during the pope's weekly general audience in a Vatican auditorium.
