D.C. area forecast: A warm, sunny Thursday but all attention focuses on Sandy's weekend approach

The next two days are close to perfection. I just hope we don't have to pay the price for this. Several models are projecting a track for hurricane Sandy up the coast close enough to at least give us some very strong winds Sunday night and Monday. Some runs hit us with some hefty rains as well. However, there are still some respected hurricane models that take it far enough northeast to spare us.

Washington area draws the young, older residents leave

Even as the Washington region's stable economy has drawn record numbers of young adults, many older residents are leaving the area, an analysis of new census data shows.

In the past three years alone, the two conflicting migrations of young and old have pushed down the median age of the metropolitan area's 5.6 million residents by six full months — to barely 36 years.

SAN FRANCISCO — He is perhaps the happiest of a jovial bunch of San Francisco Giants. That Pablo Sandoval pumped his right arm in the air and grinned on each of his treks around the base paths Wednesday night delighted all and surprised none. Smile, the man whom all of San Francisco calls "Panda" seems to say, because baseball is a fun, crazy game, and playing it this deep into October is to be celebrated and cherished, particularly if you make history.

Falls Church will enter mediation to sell its water utility to Fairfax County, where most customers are

The City of Falls Church announced Wednesday afternoon that it had agreed with Fairfax County to enter mediation with a federal magistrate judge to try to sell Falls Church's controversial water utility to Fairfax. This is large news for the approximately 100,000 Fairfax County residents who get their water from Falls Church, but who pay about 60 percent more than if they got it from Fairfax Water.
