Jennifer Rubin: Obama's Libya stonewalling isn't working
Oct 31st 2012, 15:30

President Obama is having no luck convincing voters and the media there is nothing amiss regarding his handling of the Benghazi attack.

My colleague David Ignatius is among the latest to acknowledge that there are real questions about what happened on Sept. 11, 2012, and why there was no deployment of forces for a rescue attempt. ("Why didn't the United States send armed drones or other air assistance to Benghazi immediately?. . .Looking back, it may indeed have been wise not to bomb targets in Libya that night. Given the uproar in the Arab world, this might have been the equivalent of pouring gasoline on a burning fire. But the anguish of [slain Tyrone] Woods's father is understandable: His son's life might have been saved by a more aggressive response. The Obama administration needs to level with the country about why it made its decisions.")

It's all about Christie
Oct 31st 2012, 13:48

Judging by his post this morning, Ed and I have must have entered Bizarro World, the planet in Superman comics, where everything is opposite. While Ed bravely praises Christie and defends him from Republican attacks saying that the New Jersey governor is cozying up to President Obama at precisely the wrong time, I am going to join the ranks of the critics.

Jennifer Rubin: In slow motion in Syria
Oct 31st 2012, 13:45

Josh Rogin reports: "Syrian opposition leaders of all stripes will convene in Qatar next week to form a new leadership body to subsume the opposition Syrian National Council, which is widely viewed as ineffective, consumed by infighting, and little respected on the ground. . . . The State Department has been heavily involved in crafting the new council as part of its effort oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and build a more viable and unified opposition. In September, for instance, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met with a group of Syrian activists who were flown in to New York for a high-level meeting that has not been reported until now."

Greg Sargent: The Morning Plum: Why Romney is struggling in Ohio
Oct 31st 2012, 13:08

With the two campaigns locked in a struggle over Obama's auto rescue, a central issue in Ohio, today's New York Times/CBS/Quinnipiac poll finds Obama holding a lead in the state among likely voters, 50-45. The race is probably tighter than that; the Real Clear Politics average puts Obama's lead at 2.4 points.

Jennifer Rubin: The debates showed substance matters
Oct 31st 2012, 12:45

We've made the case that not only the first presidential debate but the debates as a whole recast the race and vaulted Mitt Romney into a position to win the race. Pollster Charlie Cook is the latest election guru to agree. He writes on swing voters' reaction to the debates:

Let Christie be Christie
Oct 31st 2012, 12:34

To all my Republican friends who are flummoxed and wringing their hands over New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's acknowledgment that President Obama has been helpful in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, you need to — as they might say in Jersey — put a sock in it.

Joel Achenbach: Free Nate Silver
Oct 31st 2012, 12:28

[Sorry I haven't blogged for a couple of days. Been busy.]

I do not know Nate Silver. I have never spoken to Nate Silver. I do not know how old Nate Silver is or anything about Nate Silver's existence. I am not even sure Nate Silver is his real name. That sounds like a stage name, one that a numbers geek would pick because he secretly dreams of being a cowboy.

Alexandra Petri: The developing Trump disaster
Oct 31st 2012, 12:26

Like many Americans, Donald Trump has been distressed by the hurricane.

The high priest and chief worshiper at the temple of his own vanity, Donald Trump is distressed by the hurricane because people are talking about Sandy when he would prefer them to be talking about him.

O'Reilly calls himself a 'punk'
Oct 31st 2012, 12:13

In this segment of "The O'Reilly Factor," Fox News analyst Bernard Goldberg, in softened tones, floats his theory that some reporters secretly wished that Hurricane Sandy had hit a big swing state like Ohio or Iowa, just so that their favored candidate, President Obama, could use the occasion to showcase his leadership skills in a consequential political theater. Beyond such dead-end conspiracy talk, the segment featured about four minutes of out-and-out Bill O'Reilly narcissism, as he and Goldberg wondered why Obama and Mitt Romney hadn't accepted interview invitations from the "Factor." O'Reilly conjectured that Romney had turned down the opportunity to focus fully on swing states.

Jennifer Rubin: Morning Bits
Oct 31st 2012, 11:45

Bill Clinton made up stuff?! "Far from proving the efficacy of [President] Obama's policies, the real world evidence that Clinton presented better supports [Mitt] Romney's point that it was absurd for Obama to promise to lower ocean levels."

Trough full of stupid slop
Oct 31st 2012, 11:15

Yes, I'm a wee bit grumpy today. Superstorms can do that, even one that only struck me a glancing blow. Power on! Power off! Power on! Power off! Power on! Move bed so if big tree lands on bedroom it will merely break legs rather than crush skull! Wake up in middle of night and realize staying in tree-crash room fell short of brilliant. I could have slept in the basement! Then I would only have risked drowning. So get up in the middle of the night to see if in fact the basement is flooding. Oh-oh! a puddle in the storage room. Time to move everything wood or cardboard and start mopping! No water in the music room, but better get friend's bass amp up on blocks just in case! Oh, and go outside in the dark howling rain to scoop mud out of the little trench that takes water away from the foundation! Fun.

BuzzFeed outs, busts NYSE rumor spreader
Oct 31st 2012, 11:09

During the first presidential debate, BuzzFeed Editor Ben Smith wrote a wrapup piece making the case for Mitt Romney's blowout victory less than halfway through the event. Too fast, wrote this blog. Too premature.
