Low-lying areas were bracing for flooding Monday, as workers cleared sewer grates and residents packed their belongings as mandatory evacuations began in a flood-prone area of Fairfax County.

The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for the Washington region, and the weather grew so treacherous that D.C. officials suspended passing out sandbags as they had on Sunday because they didn't want residents venturing outside in Hurricane Sandy.

Oct 29th 2012, 20:19

Even before his parents urged his two older brothers to live with him in Washington this season, Bradley Beal was determined to take his family with him on his journey through the NBA.

Beal sketched a design that he wanted etched on his right upper arm: four descending stars, with the letters B-E-A-L inside, and names of his four siblings — Brandon, Bruce, Byron and Bryon — to the right of the stars. The names of his parents, Bobby and Besta, arch above them all.

Oct 29th 2012, 18:18

Ballou Coach Jason Lane gathered his players following Friday's 38-12 loss to H.D. Woodson and revealed to them that – even at 4-5 – they still had something to play for.

All season, Lane had not mentioned to his players that the inaugural D.C. playoffs will include a second division – known as Class A – for teams that finish with better than a .500 record. The Knights are a young squad, and Lane had wanted to keep their attention on the most immediate task at hand, which was preparing for their next game.

O'Connell claims sixth straight WCAC girls' cross-country title
Oct 29th 2012, 15:08

O'Connell won the girls' Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship and Gonzaga locked up the boys' Saturday in Reston.

Senior Devin Nihill, who will play lacrosse at Drexel next year, fell short in her bid to capture her second straight individual title, but showed grit and leadership by competing on the injured shin that has hampered her for most of the season. Her runner-up finish in 20 minutes 25 seconds was the spark O'Connell needed to collect an astounding sixth straight title. In fact, the Knights took three of the top six positions and put all five scorers in the top 15 on a warm and windy day at Lake Fairfax Park. Good Counsel, Holy Cross and Bishop Ireton followed.
