Obama sees no hurricane impact on voting "at this point"
Oct 28th 2012, 18:35

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama said on Sunday that he did not expect that Hurricane Sandy would have an impact on voting for the November 6 election but suggested it was something that would have to be examined later. "We don't anticipate that at this point, but we're obviously going to have to take a look," Obama said during a visit to the government's storm response center when asked whether Hurricane Sandy, bearing down on the East Coast, might affect voting. The massive storm's approach has already raised fears of a disruption of early voting in some states. ...

Analysis: Employees to face healthcare sticker shock
Oct 28th 2012, 17:46

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Visit to New York City orthopedist: $223. One X-ray: $50. One follow-up magnetic resonance imaging test: $766. Total bill for checking out that aching shoulder: $1,039 - all to be paid by the patient, rather than the insurer. Healthcare has gone retail. Over the next 18 months, between one quarter and one half of Americans who get insurance coverage through their employers will pay more of their doctor bills themselves as companies roll out healthcare plans with higher deductibles, benefits consultants say. The result: sticker shock. ...

Storm sets off frantic rush for supplies across East Coast
Oct 28th 2012, 17:37

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Good luck buying lanterns, generators, propane, or - if you're really unprepared - rain boots and batteries in areas in the path of Hurricane Sandy as it bears down on the U.S. East Coast. The approach of the gigantic storm - expected to come ashore Monday night - set off a scramble this weekend for supplies from Virginia to New England, causing long lines at gas stations, bare shelves at hardware and home-supply shops, and a run on bread, bottled water and canned foods at grocery stores. ...

Republican presidential nominee Romney arrives at airport in TampaWASHINGTON (Reuters) - Hurricane Sandy blew the presidential race off course on Sunday even before it came ashore, forcing Republican Mitt Romney to shift his campaign inland and fueling fears that the massive storm bearing down on the East Coast could disrupt early voting. As much of the heavily populated region braced for what could be the largest storm to ever hit the U.S. mainland, Romney re-routed his campaigning from Virginia to Ohio, another of the handful of battleground states that will decide the outcome of the November 6 election. ...

Northeast oil refineries mull rates cuts, shutdowns ahead of Sandy

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Oil refineries along the U.S. Atlantic Seaboard, having put their storm preparedness plans in place, were waiting on Sunday to see if they would have to shut units or cut rates at their plants ahead of Hurricane Sandy's expected landfall in the Northeast early this week. Six East Coast oil refineries representing 1.19 million barrels per day - or 7 percent of total U.S. capacity - could potentially be hit by the deadly storm, which left at least 41 dead as it roared through the Caribbean and churned northward. ...
