CHINCOTEAGUE — Harry Thornton was 10 years old the last time Main Street on Chincoteague Island was under water.

For the past 50 years, this place, made famous by its herd of wild ponies, has escaped the wrath of hurricanes and monster storms that have marched up the East Coast since a nor'easter hit here on Ash Wednesday in 1962.

Wellesca Pollock was not beautiful. Or perhaps she just didn't photograph well. In one photo I've seen of her, she has frizzy hair roughly parted in the middle, a few unruly strands escaping from a bun. In another, the angle of her face accentuates a rather large and droopy nose.

PM Update: Sandy's showers end tonight, but raw for Halloween; river flood risk

There's a light at the end of the tunnel. Sandy's center drifts north into New York state through Wednesday, weakening along the way. Although rain ends, coastal flood worries grow. Not to mention, it's quite chilly.

The crowd on the Wisconsin Avenue bridge materialized in minutes, out of nowhere, said police Lt. J.M. Hedgecock.



The British tourists and neighborhood residents with dogs on leashes were peering over the bridge railing, all eyes on a maroon mass of some kind, on the bed of the C&O Canal.

It rained a lot, but it did not rain fast enough to flood Bloomingdale

The National Weather Service estimates that Sandy dropped somewhere in the range of 6 to 8 inches of rain on the flood-prone Bloomingdale neighborhood since Sunday. And yet there was no significant flooding to be found. Streets were passable, basements were dry and politicians were happy.

Sandy has played havoc with schedules of touring bands. Some performers aren't able to make it to shows in D.C. tonight, and some venues, including Strathmore, have closed and canceled all events for now.

In a news conference Tuesday morning, Gov. Martin O'Malley (D) confirmed what most Washington area residents have seen anecdotally.

"We were spared the worst," O'Malley said from the state's emergency operations center. "It's clear we were fortunate to be on the weaker side of the storm."

Sandy's remnants plague the area through the day, impacts last even longer

Sandy is spinning itself out to our northwest this morning, with central pressures rising into the 980s (millibars), which is significantly weaker than it was at landfall. However, the impacts persist across much of the northeast as well as locally.

Jobless rate in Washington area remains unchanged at 5.4 percent

Plenty of trees and power lines were downed, some areas flooded, and thousands were without power on Tuesday, but many residents in the Washington region were thankful the storm's impact wasn't more damaging than it was.

Metro to resume limited service at 2 p.m.

Metro announced that it would begin operating limited bus and rail service at 2 p.m. Tuesday. MetroAccess will remain suspended all day, but should be back on Wednesday.

Rail service will resume on all lines, but the frequency of the trains will be limited to what riders would experience on a Sunday. Normal service will resume on Wednesday morning, Metro said.
