The week ahead: What D.C. travelers need to know during Hurricane Sandy
Oct 29th 2012, 12:00

This posting usually previews road and transit work that could affect your commute this week. But as Monday begins, most of you, I hope, are asking, "What commute?"

For many, there's no place to go and no way to get there. Government offices are closed to the public, schools are shut and transportation services have suspended operations as they wait out the full effects of Hurricane Sandy.

Redskins' performance, Steelers' uniforms sights to avoid
Oct 29th 2012, 11:56

What in the world is wrong with the Redskins? When I left town for a couple of weeks, they were interesting and at times exciting, if not precisely good. Now they are unwatchable — or so it appeared Sunday, when they were "Matrix" sequels-unwatchable, Katherine Heigl rom-com-unwatchable, Honey Boo Boo-unwatchable. They were epically unwatchable.

Hunker down, D.C.
Oct 29th 2012, 11:00

In the District of Columbia today, schools are closed. Government offices are closed. Courts are (mostly) closed. Metro is closed. Capital Bikeshare is closed. Early voting is closed. Everything else is closed. And for the love of god, your windows should be closed. Sandy is here, with sustained winds up to 50 mph and gusts of 70 mph expected later today. Keep your eyes on Capitol Weather Gang for the very latest information on a storm that is "unique, large, dangerous and unlike anything our region has ever experienced in a very a long time," according to Mayor Vincent C. Gray — at least since Hurricane Isabel in 2003. If you're looking for the bright side of all this, street sweeping is suspended until Thursday, so don't worry about moving your car.

D.C. area forecast: Sandy ready to power slam the nation's capital; downed trees, dangerous travel and power outages imminent
Oct 29th 2012, 10:45

At this point it's pretty simple. Don't go out if you don't need to today. If you have to get somewhere this morning, it won't be pleasant but you probably can if you're careful. By around mid-afternoon, it becomes life-threatening. By now you should have your flashlights ready and cell phones charged. Many of us may lose power, and may not get it back for multiple days. Incredibly, we've been through this once before already this year, and we'll get through it again

World Series 2012: San Francisco Giants beat Detroit Tigers in 10th inning of Game 4 to complete sweep
Oct 29th 2012, 04:12

DETROIT — What happened here Sunday may not go down as a classic Fall Classic. But when Marco Scutaro's ball settled into the wet grass in center field Sunday night at Comerica Park, the jumping, joyful crew in the San Francisco Giants' dugout didn't care one bit. Ignore them. Say they're not as good as others. And watch them celebrate.

Oct 29th 2012, 00:19

DETROIT — When the San Francisco Giants won the 2010 World Series, the pitcher they sent to the mound for the clinching Game 5 was Tim Lincecum, and the two-time Cy Young Award winner delivered a stellar eight-inning, one-run, 10-strikeout performance to bring San Francisco its first title.
