Israel reckons with unraveling Gaza policy

JERUSALEM — When the emir of Qatar paid the first visit by a head of state to the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip last week, there were two different reactions from the Israeli Foreign Ministry.

In one statement, Yigal Palmor, a spokesman for the ministry, accused the emir, Sheik Hamad Bin Khalifa al-Thani, of backing a terrorist organization and having "thrown peace under the bus."

Why would Israel bomb Sudan? Theories cite Iran, Hamas, even the U.S.

A military factory in Sudan was destroyed in a mysterious explosion last week, killing two, which the Sudanese government quickly blamed on an Israeli airstrike. It would not have been the first such strike, although Israeli officials did not comment on the explosion. Sudan is thought to provide a conduit for Iranian arms shipments through Egypt to Gaza, where Hamas and other anti-Israeli groups operate.

The 'Lucifer effect' theory of Chinese governance

There's been a recurring story out of China lately. It starts with local officials planning some project that infuriates locals – say, a chemical plant, as happened recently in the city of Ningbo. Protests mount, security forces crack down, the story goes national on social media and officials back down, maybe with one of them losing his (almost always his, as women hold few senior positions) job.
