Wizards cut Brian Cook and Shelvin Mack

The Wizards cut center/forward Brian Cook and guard Shelvin Mack on Sunday, bringing their roster down to the league-maximum of 15 ahead of the season opener. 

Despite finishing out the 2011-12 season with the Wizards and Coach Randy Wittman, Cook and Mack lost out on the battle for the final two spots on the roster to new faces in Earl Barron and Jannero Pargo, respectively.

DeAngelo Hall ejected, mum on incident

Washington Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall was ejected from the game with just under four minutes remaining for berating an official with an obscenity-laced tirade.

With 3:48 left in the game and his team down 27-12, Hall got involved in a tussle with receiver Emmanuel Sanders at the end of a play. Head linesman Dana Mckenzie broke up the fight, and Hall took off his helmet and got in the face of the official and pointed in his face as a stream of profanity appeared to fly from his mouth.

Wizards to leave for Cleveland early to avoid Hurricane Sandy

As the mid-Atlantic region made final preparations and braced for the arrival of Hurricane Sandy, the Wizards made an adjustment of their own to avoid the severe storm.

The Wizards will depart Dulles for Cleveland at 8 a.m. Monday ahead of their regular-season opener Tuesday against the Cavaliers, rather than practice at Verizon Center and travel in the afternoon as they typically would.

Worst Record: Halfway through their schedule, the Redskins are now 3-5. It's the fifth time in the last 10 seasons — and the second straight year — that the Redskins have hit the midway point at 3-5. Yes, this was a transitional campaign. Still, 3-5 is kind of drab. Each of the previous four 3-5 starts ended with either a 5-11 or a 6-10 record.

D.C. United, MLS playoff schedule

D.C. United's first appearance in the MLS playoffs in five years will occur Saturday night against New York at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J., the clubs announced Sunday.

The final leg in the total-goals Eastern Conference semifinal series will take place next Wednesday, Nov. 7, at RFK Stadium. Both matches will start at 8 p.m. TV details have not been finalized, but NBC Sports Network is expected to carry both games between the longtime rivals.

London Fletcher to start, would extend streak

Washington Redskins inside linebacker London Fletcher will indeed start Sunday's game despite being listed as questionable with a hamstring strain and balance issues.

Fletcher suffered the hamstring injury in last week's loss to the Giants, wjen he missed much of the second half. He went through six to seven hours of examinations by a neurologist on Thursday as he and the team tried to determine the cause of balance issues that have plagued him the last couple weeks.

Augustus Maiyo, Hirut Guangul win Marine Corps Marathon

Augustus Maiyo's legs were dragging by the time he reached the Pentagon on Sunday, which marked the second to last mile of the Marine Corps Marathon. Maiyo's head was bobbing from massive fatigue, and it was wet after he dumped an entire bottle of water over himself a few minutes earlier. After checking his rubber watch a few times on the last stretch, he knew he didn't have a chance at the course record. But he was still all alone.
