Jan 4th 2013, 01:03

Tasked with hiring four new assistant coaches this offseason, Virginia has turned to some familiar faces to complete Coach Mike London's overhauled staff.

The school announced Thursday that former North Carolina State Coach Tom O'Brien has been named Virginia's new associate head coach for offense and tight ends coach. O'Brien, an assistant under former Virginia Coach George Welsh from 1982-1996, hired London as a defensive line coach at Boston College in 1997 and the two worked together for four seasons.

Robert Griffin III, Russell Wilson can change a game in a snap
Jan 3rd 2013, 22:05

What we're watching in rookie playoff phenomenons Robert Griffin III, Russell Wilson and Andrew Luck is the weaponizing of the quarterback position. We all know the classic NFL prototype: a tall, briefcase-carrying guy whose good mind and strong arm are accompanied by that faint-praising word "mobility." In Griffin, Wilson and Luck, we're seeing an entirely new balance of the qualities that make a great quarterback. They are the crest of a revolutionary wave that has been forming for some time. With their unprecedented blend of brain, body, leadership and work ethic, Griffin, Wilson and Luck are redefining what we mean by the phrase "the whole package."

Experts lining up behind the Seahawks
Jan 3rd 2013, 21:35

The thing about being an NFL "expert" is there aren't a lot of job requirements. Like, if I made weekly picks for The Washington Post, I would probably be called an "expert," despite the fact that, two short months ago, I argued it was more likely that the Wizards would make the playoffs this season than the Redskins.

Nationals sign former first-round pick pitcher Tyler Herron
Jan 3rd 2013, 20:31

Of the handful of minor league deals the Nationals have doled out this winter, a few are notable: the signings of left-handed relievers BIll Bray and Fernando Abad and infielder Will Rhymes. But, in early December, the Nationals made a small move in signing right-handed starter Tyler Herron, a former first-round pick in 2005, to a minor league deal. Herron is an interesting addition because a major offseason priority for the Nationals is to bolster their starting pitching depth across the organization.

Virginia PG Jontel Evans could return vs. UNC Sunday
Jan 3rd 2013, 20:29

Virginia point guard Jontel Evans is no longer wearing a walking boot, but it's unclear whether he'll be ready for Sunday's ACC opener against North Carolina.

On a Thursday afternoon teleconference, Cavaliers Coach Tony Bennett said it was "hard to say" whether the senior would be healthy enough to face the Tar Heels. Evans has begun individual workouts again, but has yet to practice with the team since tweaking a right foot injury last month in a win over Tennessee.

The future reporter went to Officer Candidate School, served on two ships in the Pacific fleet and "chased Russian submarines around the Indian Ocean during the Cold War," according to an interview he did with ESPN public relations.

Jason Chimera: 'I don't trust Gary Bettman right now'
Jan 3rd 2013, 19:16

While the NHLPA's decision not to disclaim interest Wednesday night may have offered a temporary reprieve, NHL labor negotiations remain in a fragile state.

Several issues have yet to be resolved and multiple reports indicate that NHLPA members have been told to re-vote to give the union's executive board the authority to disclaim interest again, keeping alive the threat of the union dissolving and filing anti-trust lawsuits against the league.

How he beats you: A second-year pro, Sherman leads the Seahawks with eight interceptions and 24 pass breakups. At 6-foot-3, 195 pounds, he has above-average size for a defensive back and plays with a physical style. His long arms and strength come in handy on press coverage; he jams defenders at the line and works to disrupt them.

Jan 3rd 2013, 18:51

Remember when Virginia Tech basketball got off to its best start in 30 years and raised expectations for a team most expected to be one of the worst in the ACC? It was only a month ago, but it might as well be an entirely different season at this point.

Dog sings Hail to the Redskins
Jan 3rd 2013, 18:36

If there were Billboard charts for songs in D.C., "Hail to the Redskins" would be No. 1 this week by a large margin. Your kids are singing it. Your dogs are howling it. Even your birds are whistling it. So it seemed appropriate to compile a few of the best renditions to hit the web since Sunday.

Vincent Gray makes Redskins bet with Seattle mayor
Jan 3rd 2013, 18:00

Remember the last time D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray made a bet involving a sporting contest and a flag outside the Wilson Building? It didn't work out so well.

"I look forward to the citizens of the City of St. Louis getting a lesson not only on the baseball diamond when the Nats take the series, but also in the uniquely unjust situation in which the District's 618,000-plus residents find ourselves — denied voting representation in Congress and ultimate authority over our own budget and affairs — when our flag flies over Market Street in downtown St. Louis!" Gray said in a release, prior to Nats-Cardinals.

As NFL coaching carousel spins, the ride never ends for some
Jan 3rd 2013, 17:24

So Mike Shanahan may be in line for a contract extension after this surprising season ends? Given NFL teams' time-honored alternating traditions of handing out contract extensions or throwing coaches under the bus, this is hardly surprising. Shanahan may even have earned it, although there are two years remaining on his current deal, and two years is a long time.
