Congressional kid entertains self during oath-taking

Congratulations: Your Dad/Mom just got elected to Congress! Benefits include free rides on the little trains that run below the Capitol and occasional appearances in campaign fliers. On the flip side: You have to wear a suit to the swearing-in ceremony, and it can be really long and boring — better bring something to entertain you, as did this enterprising kid caught by C-SPAN's cameras Thursday.

Young Redskins fans will learn that playoff football can be exciting

Are you ready for some football? I mean playoff football.

The Washington Redskins will host the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. in the first round of the National Football League playoffs.

Kids who root for the Redskins might not know much about the NFL playoffs. After all, the Redskins have not played in one of these big post-season games for five years. Washington hasn't hosted a playoff game for 13 years. That's a long time.

Kind kids reap rewards of happiness

Hey, kids, want to be more popular and happier in school? Then just be nicer.

That's what researchers at the University of California discovered during a recent study. The researchers divided more than 400 kids ages 9 to 12 into two groups: One group performed "acts of kindness," and the other kept track of pleasant places they visited each week. Kind acts included "gave someone some of my lunch" or "gave my mom a hug when she was stressed by her job." Places visited included a baseball diamond, a shopping center and a grandparent's house.
