Metro to retain night service on bus routes in Southeast

Metro has withdrawn a plan to discontinue night bus service in parts of Southeast Washington where the transit agency says buses are routinely pelted with rocks.

The contentious proposal to cut service after 8 p.m. to neighborhoods served by the W6 and W8 routes was widely criticized by city officials, while Metro said the change was necessary to reduce attacks that have injured riders and drivers and damaged buses.

The article notes the fights have only intensified of late, with a "Smartphone Apps Committee" drafting model legislation that would essentially outlaw Uber in cities that adopt it.

PM Update: Record warmth today, with another shot at 70 tomorrow

As noted earlier, we soared to a new record high in D.C. today thanks to readings rising near and past 70 across the area. You can't ask for much better weather if you're headed out to the Redskins game tonight, or if you're just enjoying an evening outing to the porch. Best part for warmth fans? Public meeting in SE to address rock-throwing attacks on Metrobuses

A public meeting on Monday night will address potential service changes in a Southeast Washington area where Metro says buses are routinely hit with rocks and bricks. As Luz Lazo reported last month, officials with the Metro Transit Police and the D.C. police will offer testimony about the problem at this meeting.

Capital Bikeshare expansion stalls due to lack of materials

The District's long-planned expansion of Capital Bikeshare this fall has hit a snag because the city has been unable to get all of the needed equipment from its supplier, officials said Monday.

For much of the year, D.C. Department of Transportation officials have pledged that the city would be adding an additional 54 bike share stations throughout the city this fall. But with fall almost over, officials are recalibrating their timeline for the expansion.

'Twilight,' 'Skyfall' extend box office streak

It was a less than optimal week for new movies at the box office. The "Twilight" finale and "Skyfall," which were both released weeks ago, remain at the top of the box office. In contrast, Brad Pitt's new action thriller, "Killing Them Softly," ranked only seventh for the weekend. "Lincoln," "Rise of the Guardians" and "Life of Pi" all continue to fare well (the AP has more information on the week's numbers).

Frontline' will examine Michelle Rhee's D.C. legacy

"Frontline," the tremendously fabulous PBS news documentary program, will air an episode next month examining the legacy of former D.C. Public Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee.

The episode, titled "The Education of Michelle Rhee" and set to air Jan. 8, is billed as such: "FRONTLINE was granted unprecedented access to Rhee during her tumultuous three-year tenure as she attempted to fix a broken school system. As Rhee returns to the national stage, FRONTLINE examines her legacy in Washington, DC, including her battles with the teachers' union and her handling of a cheating scandal in the District."

Beastly super typhoon Bopha bears down on Philippines (IMAGES)

Packing winds to 160 mph, equivalent to a category 5 hurricane, super typhoon Bopha is hours away from landfall in the southern Philippines. It is targeting the Philippine island of Mindanao. The storm is traveling west-northwest at about 15 mph and should make landfall early Tuesday morning (between 20 UTC December 3 and 0 UTC December 4) local time.

Remembering Rick Majerus, college basketball's clown prince

Beneath the clown's mask that Rick Majerus wore so willingly beat the damaged heart of a man who made others laugh often but rarely found real happiness himself.

Majerus died on Saturday at the age of 64, 23 years after undergoing septuple-bypass open-heart surgery. After coming face-to-face with death at the age of 41, Majerus famously said this: "They did seven bypasses on me — one for each of the major food groups."

Now that the scientific world is finally confirming what coffee drinkers always knew — that it's okay to drink as much coffee as you like — allegiance to a single purveyor seems like a moot point.

Yet as of this writing, nearly 1,000 votes poured in for last week's reader poll to name the area's best coffee shop. The winner? With more than a quarter of the votes, it was Blind Dog Cafe. The Shaw cubbyhole, which occupies Darnell's Bar during daytime hours, opened in February and has since won loyalists with its PT's coffee, warm pimento-cheese-and-egg croissant sandwiches and shabby-chic decor.

Chartered Health Plan on cusp of sale to AmeriHealth Mercy

It appears embattled businessman Jeffrey E. Thompson is about to be out of the health-care business altogether.

His Chartered Health Plan, a longtime city provider of government-paid health care for the needy, is in final purchase negotiations with AmeriHealth Mercy, a Philadelphia firm that runs many similar plans across the country. Michael Flagg, a spokesman for the D.C. insurance department, and Michelle Davidson, an AmeriHealth spokesman, confirmed the talks.
