Teen dies after being hit by car on New York Avenue

A 16-year-old girl from Northwest Washington who was hit while crossing New York Avenue Friday night has died, and police said they are searching for the driver.

The accident occurred a few minutes after 6 p.m. at New York Avenue and First Street Northwest.

Prince George's County has a shortage of school nurses

Caleb Spruill, an honor roll student who suffers from asthma and an autoimmune deficiency, didn't go to school for a week in December.

It wasn't because the second-grader was sick.

Caleb stayed home because there was no one at his school to administer his medicine properly, his mother, Melody, said.

In Washington area, hoped-for snow disappoints

For a moment in the past few days, it looked like a small snowstorm expected for Saturday might bring a winter wonderland, just in time for the new year. But it turned out to be a winter wet instead.

Saturday's storm, which began in the early morning hours and continued through about noon, brought less snow and more rain than expected, with snow totals less than an inch in most places throughout the region.

Fire kills woman after she went back in her home

A woman in her 80s who had initially escaped a fire in her Greenbelt house Friday night apparently ran back inside to warn others, and died in the blaze, according to a Prince George's County Fire Department spokesman.

D.C. police make robbery arrests

A 19-year-old man and a juvenile were arrested Thursday evening and charged with robbing two women in separate incidents in Northeast Washington, according to D.C. police.

Police said the first incident occurred about 5 p.m. in the 5300 block of James Place NE, a few blocks off Eastern Avenue. Officer Araz Alali, a D.C. police spokesman, said a man approached a juvenile female as she was unloading a car and demanded her keys.

Update: Snow, mixed precipitation exit region with little accumulation

Noon Update: The back edge of the snow has reached the District where big fat flakes are falling sometimes mixed with rain and sleet. Southwest of town, precipitation has ended. Over the next 30 to 60 minutes, precipitation will exit the region entirely.

A gray-haired man who carries a cane allegedly robbed two banks in downtown Washington before being arrested Friday morning as he tried to make his escape aboard a Metro train, according to the D.C. police and the FBI.

D.C. police release video of men near shooting

D.C. police have released a video showing four men possibly linked to a shooting earlier this week in Southeast Washington that left a man critically wounded.

The shooting occurred Wednesday about 3:30 p.m. at 14th and K streets Southeast, two blocks south of the Potomac Avenue Metro. The video released by police shows four men getting onto an escalator at the Eastern Market Metro station in Capitol Hill. At least two of the men are running and the others appear to be in a hurry. Officer Araz Alali, a D.C. police spokesman, said the suspected gunman was seen in a black Pontiac car that was later found abandoned in the 1000 block of South Carolina Avenue SE. Alali said the car had been stolen from Prince George's County.
