Bull market roars past many U.S. investors

Americans have missed out on almost $200 billion of stock gains as they drained money from the market in the past four years, haunted by the financial crisis.

The value of assets in equity mutual, exchange-traded and closed-end funds increased about 85 percent to $5.6 trillion since the bull market began in March 2009, trailing the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index's 94 percent advance, according to data compiled by Bloomberg and Morningstar. The proportion of retirement funds in stocks fell about half a percentage point, compared with an average rise of 8.2 percentage points in rallies since 1990.

New rules on debit-card processing start to pinch small banks and credit unions

Early flu season could be severe, experts warn

Flu season in the United States is having its earliest start in nearly a decade and health officials say this season could be a bad one.

Although flu is always unpredictable, the early nature of the cases and the predominant type circulating this year could make this a severe flu season, said officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

I've found the rumors that Anna Wintour could be named ambassador to Britain surprising. Being empress of Vogue and the unofficial head of the fashion world seems like a more interesting job, and my understanding is it provides plenty of opportunities to travel to London, if that's important to you. Suzy Khimm has already written about the much-feared "milk cliff." If Congress fails to renew the farm bill by Jan. 1, the country's farm policy will revert back to laws dating from 1949. Government price supports for milk would rise significantly — and the cost of milk could rise by as much as $3 per gallon. Dairy doom!
