Mediator says deal reached to avert port strike for now

The International Longshoremen's Association (ILA), which represents 14,500 workers at 15 container ports in the eastern United States, and the U.S. Maritime Alliance (USMX) of shippers, terminal operators and port authorities, have agreed to extend their current contract by 30 days to finalize details, the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service said on Friday. ...

The skyline of Lower Manhattan in New York is seen behind the shipping docks in Newark, New JerseyWASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House on Friday urged dock workers, port owners and shippers to resolve a labor dispute that threatens to deteriorate into a strike that could affect 15 ports on the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf coasts. "Federal mediators are assisting with the negotiations, and we continue to monitor the situation closely and urge the parties to continue their work at the negotiating table to get a deal done as quickly as possible," White House spokesman Matt Lehrich said. Cowboys player's blood alcohol level was twice legal limit

DALLAS (Reuters) - The blood alcohol level of Dallas Cowboys player Josh Brent was more than the twice the legal limit at the time of the December 8 automobile accident that killed his friend and teammate Jerry Brown Jr., according to police documents released late Thursday. Brent, 24, was also driving with a suspended license from Illinois, according to the documents, which cite speed, alcohol and swerving as contributing factors in the crash, in the Dallas suburb of Irving. Brent's blood alcohol level was 0.189, according to the Irving police documents. The legal limit in Texas is 0.08. ...
