Plans for Loudoun-Prince William highway move forward; crossing to Md. under discussion

The major North-South highway that is being planned for Loudoun and Prince William counties got a public rollout of sorts last week. "Open houses" were held at Stone Bridge High School in Ashburn and the Four Points Sheraton in Manassas. There were no formal presentations for this new "Northern Virginia North-South Corridor," just a series of informational boards that showed roughly where the limited-access highway would go and why local and state officials think it's needed.

D.C. area forecast: Calm Friday; Light snow, mix and rain likely on Saturday

We have a chilly but relatively seasonably cold period of temperatures ahead. And yes, some snow is possible for our winter weather lovers. Luckily, it's not looking too disruptive or treacherous for traveling, but some slick spots particularly north and west of the city seem to be on the table. After that, we do get some sunshine to accompany our cold air mass. Is that some solace?

Man fatally shot in Sterling

A man was fatally shot Thursday night in Sterling, the Loudoun Sheriff's office said.

Deputies were called to check on the welfare of a person in the area of Great Trail Terrace and Trail Run Terrace at about 7 p.m., said Liz Mills, a sheriff's office spokeswoman.

As 'fiscal cliff' deadline nears, OPM updates furlough guidelines

With talks on averting the "fiscal cliff" apparently stalled, the Office of Personnel Management posted new guidance to federal workers for administrative furloughs on its Web site Thursday afternoon.

"We wanted to take some prudent steps to keep federal employees informed in case of an order for sequestration," said Thomas Richards, OPM's communications director.

3 dead in crash at Springfield interchange

Three people died Thursday night at the Springfield interchange when a pickup truck slammed into the back of a 18-wheel tractor-trailer that was stuck in traffic on a flyover ramp, Virginia State Police said.

Woman goes into labor on the Red Line

Metro officials said a Red Line passenger apparently went into labor shortly before 5:30 p.m. Thursday. The train, bound for Grovesnor-Strathmore, pulled into the Gallery Place station and Metro Transit police and emergency medical personnel were summoned.

Uranium mine debate pits residents in quaint town of Chatham, Va.

Not much has changed in the nearly 140 years since the town of Chatham, Va., was incorporated. Depending on whom you ask, that is either a good or a bad thing.

Still standing are two of the community's pillars, the preparatory academies Chatham Hall and Hargrave Military Academy, both founded near the turn of the 20th century. Long gone are the textile mills and tobacco farms that served as the backbone of the region's economy — and the jobs that came with them.
