PM Update: Cool, cloudy conditions ring in New Year; Rain or snow showers possible Tuesday
Dec 31st 2012, 20:10

Other than some early-morning breaks, which helped to produce a beautiful sunrise, we've been largely locked into cloudy skies on this New Year's Eve in the D.C. area. Highs largely in the upper 30s to lower 40s are more or less seasonable, if a little cool. Those clouds aren't in a hurry to go anywhere over the next day. But, on the bright side, we'll make it through tonight's celebration without needing umbrellas or snow gear.

What are your picks for the top transportation developments of 2012?
Dec 31st 2012, 18:37

I made a top 10 list of the D.C. region's transportation events for 2012, and we published it on Sunday's Commuter page, but to do it, I had to think in a way that most travelers don't.

I might conclude that for the entire region, the opening of the Beltway HOT lanes was the biggest deal. However, most travelers won't even see those lanes. What planners call the "transportation network" is a very personal thing pegged to a particular route of prime importance to the individual traveler.

Hail
Dec 31st 2012, 15:55

Hail to Alfred Morris, the Redskins' humble-as-pie rookie running back, who led his team to a division-championship-sealing win with a 200-yard rushing performance Sunday night. Hail to Robert Griffin III, who made key plays and avoided making any big mistakes. Hail to Tony Romo, who didn't. Hail to DeAngelo Hall, who somehow kept a lid on star Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant. Hail to Mike Shanahan, who swore he wasn't giving up on the season after his team started 3-6. And hail to Marion Barry, who saw this all coming, sort of.

Decaying D.C. bridge reflects state of thousands of such structures nationwide
Dec 31st 2012, 15:18

A dozen blocks from the dome of the U.S. Capitol, a bridge rots as 70,000 drivers roar across it each day.

Now and then, a chunk of concrete shakes loose from the bridge's underside and plops into the river, but mostly it is quiet corrosion that has eaten holes through the thick steel beams that were placed six decades ago. Most are the size of a quarter or no bigger than a dollar bill, but one girder looks like something that has been gnawed on by rats, so riddled with gaping holes that no wise person would dare stand on it.
