Fatal collision between car and tractor-trailer in Fairfax County

Police in Fairfax County are investigating a deadly car crash early Monday.

The incident happened around 2 a.m. on Sully Road near Route 66, where a car and a tractor-trailer collided, police said.

The driver of the car was killed in the crash, police said.

Police search for suspect in fatal hit-and-run in Fauquier County

A 58-year-old Virginia man was killed in a hit-and-run in Fauquier County, authorities said.

Douglas Rabren, of Stafford, was killed shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday while driving on Route 17 in the county, about a mile south of Route 28.

Man, 23, fatally shot in Southeast D.C.

Police have identified a man who was shot and killed in Southeast D.C. early Sunday.

Angelo Alphonso Payne, 23, was fatally shot shortly after midnight in the 3400 block of Croffut Place SE, police said.

Loudoun deer hunters rank 3rd in Virginia in kills

First of all, the proper term is deer "harvesting," not kills, for whoever wrote that headline. Second, the hunters of Loudoun County are truly doing their part to manage the deer population, harvesting 6,725 deer in 2011, the third most in the Commonwealth, according to statistics kept by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

Prince William to get a second newspaper; Times Community Media launches Prince William Times

Even before the Manassas News & Messenger puts out its final issue Monday, a second media company has declared its intention to fill the void: the Times Community Media group will launch the weekly Prince William Times on Jan. 9. It now joins Prince William Today, also launching in January from Northern Virginia Media Services, and continues the competition for news and ads currently ongoing between the two companies' Loudoun weeklies, the Loudoun Times-Mirror and Leesburg Today.

D.C. area forecast: A mostly dry, chilly week to start 2013; no New Year's Eve weather concerns

We close Washington, D.C.'s warmest year on record (2012) with temperatures close to average but open 2013 with slightly cooler than normal temps through its first weekend. We may see some spotty rain/snow showers New Year's Day, but nothing of consequence. Then, despite highs in the 30s starting Wednesday, moisture is in short supply, shutting down snow chances.

Greenbelt fire victim identified as former nurse

The woman killed in the fire in Greenbelt on Friday has been identified and described as a former nurse.

Betty M. Starry, 86, was killed in the blaze where she lived on Laurel Hill Road, said Mark E. Brady, the chief spokesman for the department.

On New Year's Eve, when December 2012 concludes, it will go into the books as warmer than a normal Washington December. In fact, figures will show it to be much warmer. Perhaps five degrees warmer, or even more.

Flashback:

A 16-year-old kid sits at a table by the back wall of the Birchmere, the original one on Four Mile Run, tucked between body shops and transmission joints. It's 1976 and it's a Thursday night. One of many on which this teenager somehow persuaded his parents to give him the car so he could cross the Potomac to go see his favorite band. The low ceilings amplify the clatter of plates of burgers and pitchers of beer. The lights go down and the chattery hubbub turns into whistles and cheers. "Ladies and gentlemen, the Seldom Scene!"
