Junior quarterback David Fales doesn't share the memories with his more experienced San Jose State football teammates who have struggled through a grueling succession of losing seasons. The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder signed to play with the 24th-ranked Spartans last December after two years of junior college football, so he's only heard the horror stories of the 12-loss 2010 season.

Frank Beamer, Virginia Tech look to finish the season right against Rutgers in the Russell Athletic Bowl

Virginia Tech Coach Frank Beamer looked at his protruding belly in the mirror one day this spring and didn't like what he saw.

So with his daughter's summer wedding in mind, he went on a diet, eschewing sugars and starches in favor of fruits and vegetables. By the time training camp arrived in August, Beamer had shed nearly 32 pounds, slimming down to the weight he played at as a defensive back for the Hokies from 1966 to 1968.

Special teams coach Danny Smith celebrates Lorenzo Alexander's Pro Bowl nod

Shortly after his selection to the Pro Bowl, Redskins special teams captain Lorenzo Alexander gave credit to the unit's coach, Danny Smith, who has helped him develop his skills.

Alexander went from practice squad player to back up lineman, special teams contributor and eventually special teams captain and linebacker. This season he leads the league with 19 special teams tackles, according to the NFL.

Redskins-Cowboys: Jarvis Jenkins rounds into form as regular season finale approaches

As he nears the end of his first NFL regular season, the game finally has started to slow down for Redskins defensive end Jarvis Jenkins.

Sidelined by a torn ACL for all of the 2011 season – which was supposed to be his rookie campaign – the Clemson product has spent much of this year acclimating to the NFL and the defensive end position. But as the Redskins head toward the regular season finale against the Dallas Cowboys, Jenkins is coming off four of his best games, according to defensive coordinator Jim Haslett.

Stonewall Jackson senior J.R. Washington scored 61 points Thursday afternoon in a win over Freedom-Woodbridge in the George Long Holiday Hoops Tournament at Wakefield, a performance that resulted in an almost immediate recruiting boost for the 6-foot-3 shooting guard.

Virginia Tech's offseason offensive tweaks didn't work out as planned

Less may mean more for Virginia Tech's offense. At least that's what Coach Frank Beamer thinks heading into Friday's Russell Athletic Bowl.

The Hokies instituted several changes to their offensive scheme during the offseason, adding the pistol formation and more misdirection to better take advantage of quarterback Logan Thomas's diverse skill set. But the experiment, like Virginia Tech's entire season, didn't work out the way anybody hoped.

Coach Mike Shanahan said right tackle Tyler Polumbus (concussion) has been cleared to practice fully on Friday is expected to practice fully Friday. Polumbus practiced in a limited capacity Thursday, and if he responds favorably to that workout, will practice without limitation Friday, the coach said.

Robert Griffin III takes Pro Bowl selection in stride

A day after becoming a Pro Bowl quarterback, Redskins rookie Robert Griffin III said he "didn't really have too much of a reaction" when he was given the news Wednesday by Coach Mike Shanahan.

Griffin was selected to the Pro Bowl on Wednesday along with Redskins left tackle Trent Williams and special teams standout Lorenzo Alexander. Linebacker London Fletcher and rookie tailback Alfred Morris were named alternates.

Adam LaRoche's market still in flux

That the Boston Red Sox are talking to Adam LaRoche, which was reported on Wednesday, isn't exactly new. The Red Sox were among a handful of teams -- the Texas Rangers, Seattle Mariners, Tampa Bay Rays also on that list -- that had contact with LaRoche earlier in the winter. But that the Red Sox, presumably in more advanced discussions than before, are back in the conversation is an interesting development in the free agency of LaRoche, and for various reasons.

And then, even by the poppin' fresh standards set by the Jets of 2012, the ridiculous happened. Ryan announced that Mark Sanchez will be the starting quarterback Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. Greg McElroy, who was named the starter when Sanchez was benched last week, suffered a concussion at some point during his 11-sack nightmare against the San Diego Chargers. Ryan admitted he was "stunned" by McElroy's injury. The quarterback experienced a headache while lifting weights and went to the trainers, Ryan said.

Home field advantage is even more valuable in the playoffs

After the Redskins' win and the Giants' and Cowboys' losses Sunday, the numbers give Washington a 73% chance of making the playoffs. This includes both the more likely possibility that they win the division Sunday with a victory over Dallas, and the less likely possibility that should they lose, they get enough help to qualify for a wild card spot.

Cowboys offensive player to watch: Dez Bryant

How he beats you: In the second half of the season, Dez Bryant has been perhaps the NFL's best wide receiver. He has gained 808 yards and scored 10 touchdowns in the last seven games, with at least one score in every contest. Bryant played the last two weeks with a broken left index finger, but in Sunday's overtime loss to the Saints he still had the biggest statistical game of his career nine catches for 224 yards and two touchdowns, both 58 yards.
