Greg Sargent: The case for the Dems' negotiating strategy

The White House and Dems are taking heavy criticism this morning for giving more ground towards Republicans in the fiscal cliff talks. Dems have offered to raise the income threshold to $450,000 and to keep the estate tax threshold at $5 million, in exchange for an increase in unemployment benefits but no additional stimulus spending. This is being widely denounced on Twitter and elsewhere as squandering Dem leverage.

Jennifer Rubin: Obama just makes it worse

Let's get this straight: The president can't make a deal with the speaker of the House on the fiscal cliff. He then punts to the Senate Majority and Minority leaders, but alas Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) can't even come up with a counteroffer. Reid then punts to Vice President Joe Biden, who presumably is more skilled than the president at this sort of thing. One is tempted to ask what President Obama really does all day.

Hard truths. "When President Obama talks about taxing the rich, he means the top 2 percent of Americans. John A. Boehner, the House speaker, talks about an even thinner slice. But the current and future fiscal imbalances are too large to exempt 98 percent or more of the public from being part of the solution. Ultimately, unless we scale back entitlement programs far more than anyone in Washington is now seriously considering, we will have no choice but to increase taxes on a vast majority of Americans."
