Maurice Hurt says he'll be ready if needed for another start at right tackle
Dec 26th 2012, 21:24

Maurice Hurt could be in line to make a second straight start for the Redskins at right tackle Sunday, with Tyler Polumbus still sidelined by a concussion.

Hurt started at that spot in last weekend's triumph at Philadelphia, one week after Polumbus suffered his concussion during a win at Cleveland. Polumbus missed Wednesday's practice and still must be cleared by doctors to resume practicing and playing. If that doesn't happen, the Redskins again would rely on Hurt in Sunday night's game against the Dallas Cowboys with the NFC East title at stake.

Robert Griffin III not focusing on magnitude of Sunday's Redskins-Cowboys game
Dec 26th 2012, 20:45

Already in his young NFL career, Robert Griffin III has had quite a few big moments: the season opening win at New Orleans, the comeback victory at Tampa Bay, the game-clinching 76-yard touchdown run versus Minnesota, back-to-back four-touchdown games against Philadelphia and Dallas, the Monday Night Football win over the Giants. But none carries as much weight as this Sunday's regular season finale against the Cowboys.

Last week, Baseball America released its top 10 ranking of the Nationals' best prospects. We devised our own list here of the Nationals' farm system, before the prospect bible announced its own, as a way for avid followers to learn a little more about each of the players: What are their skills, where do they stand in their development and when could they make it to the majors? We won't rank the 10 players here, but we obviously start in a specific order. Beginning today, we will examine two prospects at a time.

Dec 26th 2012, 20:29

Johnny Cash's "Walk the Line" resonated through the downstairs bar at Iron Horse Taproom on a recent weeknight, but with the exception of a few patrons playing shuffleboard and another handful surrounding a table, the Man in Black serenaded mostly unoccupied orange and black barstools.

Ray Lewis activated but unlikely to play until postseason
Dec 26th 2012, 20:17

Linebacker Ray Lewis is returning to the Baltimore Ravens' active roster, but playing in the regular-season finale is another matter.

The move, with the team also placing wide receiver LaQuan Williams on the injured reserve list, was largely procedural. Lewis tore his triceps in an Oct. 14 victory over the Dallas Cowboys and was placed on the injured list/designated to return. Under that new designation, the team had to activate him because he returned to the practice field three weeks ago.

Virginia Tech QB Logan Thomas looks to the future after frustrating season
Dec 26th 2012, 19:12

BLACKSBURG, Va. —Virginia Tech play caller and quarterbacks coach Mike O'Cain might be alone in this assessment, but he believes redshirt junior Logan Thomas was better than ever this year.

Though most simply see Thomas's 14 interceptions and lower completion percentage as proof that the season didn't go as planned, O'Cain "would've hated to go into games without him." He marvels at how Thomas never seemed to crack mentally running the Hokies' pro-style offense and remained a "put-it-on-me kind of guy" through miscues that weren't entirely his fault and losses that would have been worse had he not put his body on the line.

Dec 26th 2012, 18:34

Robert Griffin III didn't have his usual productivity in the run game on Sunday against Philadelphia. But Griffin did just enough both with his legs, in addition to throwing for 198 yards and two touchdowns, to reach another milestone.

DeJon Gomes on the field for Redskins practice, Tyler Polumbus not present early
Dec 26th 2012, 17:19

Safety DeJon Gomes was on the field as the Redskins began practice Wednesday. But right tackle Tyler Polumbus wasn't seen during the portion of the session open to reporters.

Gomes suffered a second-degree MCL sprain during Sunday's game against Philadelphia. Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said Monday that Gomes would be evaluated on a day-by-day basis. It wasn't clear how heavy a workload Gomes was able to handle because only the first 20 minutes of the session are open to the media.

America is rooting for the Redskins
Dec 26th 2012, 16:51

The Dallas Cowboys are great for television ratings, but that doesn't mean everyone is a Cowboys fan. This ESPN.com poll -- which is admittedly unscientific, but which has garnered nearly 200,000 votes -- indicates quite strongly that America is on the side of the Redskins on Sunday night.

The best Military Bowl haircut
Dec 26th 2012, 16:37

Who says second-tier bowl games like the Military Bowl don't mean much to their participants? Does this haircut not suggest Military Bowl passion?

I believe the head in question belongs to San Jose State safety Cullen Newsome, which means you should probably be cheering for San Jose State on Thursday. Also, I met a couple of Spartans and their parents in a hotel restaurant this week, and they were quite charming. Thursday afternoon, RFK Stadium. Go Spartans.

Michael Vick says this start isn't an audition
Dec 26th 2012, 15:42

Michael Vick is expected to get the chance to do something he has not done in quite some time: start for the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday against the New York Giants.

It would give Vick, sidelined since he suffered a concussion Nov. 11, a chance to remind NFL teams just what he can do. Given that he isn't likely to be with the Eagles much longer and that a number of NFL teams could use a quarterback (cough, Arizona, cough), that's probably a good idea. But Vick said he isn't looking at this opportunity as an audition.
