Fatal crash occurred on way to funeral

An 87-year-old man on his way to his son's funeral was one of the three people killed in Northern Virginia in a crash Thursday night at the Springfield interchange.

Peter Stesney Jr. of Allentown, Pa, was driving a pickup truck that rear-ended a tractor-trailer about 7 p.m. on a ramp leading from the Capital Beltway to southbound Interstate 95, Virginia State Police said.

Woman with memory lapses who landed at D.C. hospital is reunited with family

The woman lay in her hospital bed and tried to remember.

She didn't know why she was there, and she didn't recognize Sarah Sabo, the acute-care nurse practitioner who visited her daily in her room at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Sabo, after reintroducing herself each day, would gently ask questions. Where had she been living? Did she have family anywhere? The woman shook her head. She knew that her name was Pat Hawkins and that she was 54, but beyond that, her mind was blank.

Unfunded D.C. Council property tax bill may cost congregation its building

A District congregation is facing the loss of its sanctuary after amassing hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid property taxes, despite city officials' efforts to exempt it from tax rolls.

The 13th Street Church of Christ had until the close of business Friday to turn over $100,000 to Eagle Bank to retain the building in Northwest Washington. That deadline had been extended from Christmas Eve, when the church was supposed to hand over $200,000.

O'Malley names new appellate judge, top utilities regulator in Maryland

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley (D) on Friday named Douglas R. M. Nazarian, current chairman of the state's Public Service Commission, to a seat on the Court of Special Appeals, the state's intermediate appellate court.
