Tiffany Alston declared bankruptcy before running for office

Former Maryland State Del. Tiffany Alston declared bankruptcy seven months before she tried to use her campaign funds to cover her wedding expenses, according to court records.

Alston's $182,758 in debts included $26,000 she owed her former law partner, who alleged in a lawsuit that Alston had charged tens of thousands of dollars in personal expenses to the firm, the court records show.

Prince George's takes up school boundaries

The Prince George's County school system is reviewing a proposal that would adjust the boundaries of two schools, shift some sixth-graders to middle schools and consolidate a special education program. The plan could change where more than 1,000 students will attend school in August.

Guardian of the Potomac Ed Merrifield is sailing toward the end of his job as riverkeeper

Friends say he has the vigor of a younger man, but Ed Merrifield knows the truth. He is tiring at age 65, and ready to give up his demanding third career as the Potomac riverkeeper.

As his boat sped past the Francis Scott Key Bridge recently on one of his final runs on the Potomac, wind blowing his snow-white beard, Merrifield said, "It's time. It feels right." He cut the engine and, in the middle of the river, boat gently rocking, reflected on why he and other riverkeepers are such fierce protectors of waters.

Crystal City streetcar plans underway

The District's H Street streetcar gets a lot of buzz, much of it owing to the neighborhood's ongoing redevelopment and proximity to downtown. The Purple Line, more than a decade in the making, is much scrutinized as plans move forward to build a 16-mile transit way between Bethesda and New Carrollton. And the Arlington-Fairfax Columbia Pike streetcar has generated noisy opposition from activists who prefer less-costly buses.

Civil servants accused of rule-breaking can get stuck in an ill-defined limbo

Paul Brachfeld, the inspector general for the National Archives, plans to ring in the new year with his wife with a relaxed visit to their vacation home in Rehoboth Beach. In October, the couple took a cruise to Puerto Rico. Brachfeld runs every morning in Silver Spring, hikes with his dog in the woods most afternoons and catches up with his adult daughters in the evening. All while collecting his $186,000 government salary.

D.C. man killed by gunfire in Southeast Washington

A man was shot and killed in Southeast Washington early Sunday morning. Officers responded to gunfire in the 3400 block of Croffut Place, just off Minnesota Avenue, soon after midnight.

The victim was identified as Angelo Alphonso Payne, 23, of Southeast Washington.

Federal marriage law may force deportation of many immigrant gay spouses
