Jake Layman leaned back in a chair far too small for his 6-foot-9 frame, wearing cozy moccasin slippers and flannel pajamas unwrapped for Christmas back home in Massachusetts. Those precious few days at his Wrentham house five minutes from the Rhode Island border provided a break from the rigors of basketball and class. The freshman needed a clear head before returning to College Park. He needed to figure out what type of player he would become.

Redskins weighing possible contract extension for Mike Shanahan

The Washington Redskins are seriously considering negotiating a contract extension this offseason with Coach Mike Shanahan, multiple people with knowledge of the team's planning said Monday.

The extension would be Shanahan's reward for coaching the Redskins to their first NFC East title since the 1999 season. The Redskins secured the division crown with Sunday night's 28-18 victory over the Dallas Cowboys at FedEx Field. They're scheduled to host the Seattle Seahawks this Sunday at 4:30 p.m. in a first-round NFC playoff game.

Jon Gruden will interview for NFL jobs, report says

There are, at the moment, seven head-coaching vacancies in the NFL and that means only one thing.

Cue the Jon Gruden talk.

The "Monday Night Football" analyst will, according to CBS Sports.com's Mike Freeman, interview with teams that have, over the last few week, discreetly contacted Gruden or his representatives to assess his interest in returning to the sideline. Freeman reports that teams were told Gruden would speak to them when the regular season ended.

Tickets for Redskins playoff game vs. Seattle already sold out

The Redskins announced early Monday afternoon that tickets for the NFC wild-card matchup at FedEx Field against the Seattle Seahawks have sold out.

The Redskins, who won the NFC East and the right to host a first-round playoff game, haven't hosted a playoff game since 1999.

Charles Mitchell named ACC freshman of the week

Maryland forward Charles Mitchell, who had his third double-double this season in a 19-point, 14-rebound effort against Delaware State on Saturday, was named the ACC freshman of the week.

Mitchell's honor is the second this season for the Terrapins, who had Alex Len win the ACC player of the week after his breakout performance in the opener versus Kentucky.

Redskins-Cowboys sets D.C. ratings record

Sunday night's Redskins-Cowboys game was the highest-rated regular season primetime NFL broadcast in the D.C. market since Nielsen began tracking individual markets in 1987, according to NBC.

The game earned a 44.6 rating in this market, according to Nielsen overnights -- meaning about 1,053,000 homes in this market tuned into the game. It also earned a 68 percent share, meaning a strong majority of in-use televisions were tuned to that game. Those are just absurd numbers.
