With business booming from sales of merchandise featuring NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL stars, Bleacher Creatures wanted to give more obscure players a chance at having their likenesses immortalized. With virtually any pro athlete to choose from, the company used Washington Capitals utility man Brooks Laich as its guinea pig. The only requirement was that Bleacher Creatures raise enough money to cover the factory minimums for the product. Nothing concrete, of course, because what if LaRoche and the Nationals couldn't strike a deal? But those conversations were substantive enough that if and when LaRoche signed, the Nationals knew exactly what their options were. "Kind of a little welcome back party," the owner told the radio station. "We're gonna try something, never been done. Open a practice at Verizon Center. Just open the doors, all our fans, anybody can come on in. If it's raining out and it's cold, I'll bet you there's gonna be 20,000 people in there. We're gonna feed people, give them sodas and hot dogs. I'm very apologetic that we lost so many games, but enough talk about what was happening, it's time to drop the puck." Believe nothing. Question everything. If your mom tells you she loves you, fact-check it. If the scoreboard says there's a rain delay, stick out your hand. If an NFL franchise tells you it's ripping out seats to better the fan experience, fact-check it. If NHL owners tell you they just care about helping the fans, question it. But can he break Peter Bondra's mark of 34 goals set during the last 48-game shortened season of 1994-95? Read full article >> | | F.P. "For Alex, it's a work ethic," Kolzig said then. "He just has to get back to being the way he was in his younger days and maybe not get wrapped up too much in the rock star status that comes with being Alex Ovechkin." Read full article >> | |
