Bill O'Brien will stay at Penn State
Jan 4th 2013, 14:08

Joe Paterno lasted for decades as the Penn State football coach. His successor, Bill O'Brien, isn't going to bolt after only one season.

O'Brien had plenty of opportunity. He interviewed for the vacant Cleveland Browns head-coaching job this week, and was, according to multiple reports, on the Philadelphia Eagles' list to succeed Andy Reid. The Arizona Cardinals and San Diego Chargers also reportedly were interested. Jan 4th 2013, 11:40

There's one sure way to keep Phil Jackson on the Los Angeles Lakers' perennial list of possible coaches: marry him.

Frankly, it's about time. Buss, 51, and Jackson, 69, have been together since 1999 and live together in Playa del Ray. (Maybe the Zen Master just pried a diamond out of one of those 11 championship rings )

The offense would come around this winter, they figured, and when it did, they would make a serious push for the title in a weakened Colonial Athletic Association.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The eighth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team failed to protect a double-digit lead in the first half, then trailed by 11 late in the game before staging a frantic comeback that wasn't enough to overcome an extended shooting lull in a 60-57 loss to No. 15 North Carolina on Thursday night at Carmichael Arena.

Redskins' secondary is vastly improved in season's second half
Jan 4th 2013, 02:39

If there was an indelible image from the ugly start to the Washington Redskins' season — three wins in nine games, another nicely paved road to oblivion — it came at the tail end of their Oct. 21 game against the New York Giants. Eli Manning dropped back to pass, his team trailing the Redskins by three points with 1 minute 23 seconds left in the game. From his 15-yard line, Manning unloaded, and the ball nestled into the hands of receiver Victor Cruz, just beyond midfield.

Jan 4th 2013, 02:17

Pete Carroll took on a tough assignment in replacing Bill Parcells as head coach of the New England Patriots. He won 10 games, then nine the next year and eight in Year Three. It's no wonder on his last day leading the franchise, a fan in the stands held up a sign that said, "Had the Tuna, but ended up with a Flounder."
