Wizards vs. Mavericks: Dallas is latest to use Washington to end losing streak
Jan 2nd 2013, 02:30

Dallas Mavericks forward Vince Carter is long removed from the days when he could hurdle centers with ease for spread-eagle dunks. He entered the league only five years after Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal was born, but when they were matched up in the fourth quarter of the Wizards' 103-94 loss Tuesday at Verizon Center, Carter showed that savvy and skill can still trump youth on occasion.

Postgame: Depth carries Terps again in win over IUPUI
Jan 2nd 2013, 00:14

For a Maryland basketball team that derives strength from depth, it was only fitting that its final non-conference tune-up before ACC play was powered by a top-to-bottom effort.

Just two Terrapins scored in double-digits, but all 10 regulars had at least four points in

Maryland's 81-63 blowout over IUPUI at Comcast Center on Tuesday. There were no breakout performances like Charles Mitchell's monstrous double-double against Delaware State, no gaudy stat lines for the stars. Just overall consistency, with little flash, a trait that should bode well with only conference games ahead.

Maryland vs. IUPUI: Terps end non-conference schedule with 81-63 win
Jan 2nd 2013, 00:04

The Maryland basketball team never asked for such a weak non-conference schedule, compiled long before Coach Mark Turgeon learned three key cogs were on board for the upcoming season. Logan Aronhalt, Charles Mitchell and Dez Wells arrived after Turgeon loaded the slate with the likes of Maryland-Eastern Shore, Delaware State and Monmouth, so they endured blowouts against undersized opponents, working to get better but longing for something bigger.

Bullis DE Peter Angeh chooses Massachusetts over Ohio
Jan 1st 2013, 22:59

Bullis senior defensive end Peter Angeh orally committed to Massachusetts on New Year's Eve, capping a meteoric rise for a player who was virtually un-recruited after his junior season.

With six Football Bowl Subdivision scholarship offers on the table, Angeh had narrowed down his options to Ohio and U-Mass. over the past two weeks after also considering Cincinnati, Western Michigan and Temple for much of the fall. The 6-foot-3, 250-pound lineman visited U-Mass. two weeks ago and said he felt comfortable with the school's atmosphere, especially academically, where he hopes to study sports management.

Redskins-Seahawks: Rookie kicker Kai Forbath helped power Redskins' run to the playoffs
Jan 1st 2013, 20:17

Kai Forbath chose the life of a kicker, and for the first five weeks of this NFL season that meant unemployment. He lived off the money he made last year on the Dallas Cowboys' injured reserve. He paid no rent, living at home with his parents in Los Angeles and staying some nights at his girlfriend's apartment. Forbath worked out with a trainer and practiced kicking three days a week, a college friend holding the ball for him. He played golf many days and cooked dinner with his mother most evenings.
